protecting bare metal help

I know there is a product you can use to coat bare metal while you are working on it to prevent surface rust. What is called and where do i get it?

I use Picklex 20.... you can order it from quite a few places online. Its not cheap but ti works.

Cosmoline is an industrial protectant used to coat bare metal parts and prevent corrosion...works great, but requires MEK or some similar solvent to remove. I'd suggest this if it's going to sit a long time.

POR Metal-Ready is good stuff as well. It will create a zinc-phosphate oxidation layer on steel that is a great base for most paints, primers, etc.

that is the type of product i am looking for. i am looking to protect the metal until i am ready for primer.

The one thing I dont like about the Metal Ready is that you have to wash it off with water before painting. I just dont like to have water around bare metal since I worry that some of it will get on untreated areas and rust. Its great for small parts that you can completely coat and rinse, but with parts thats have seams or pockets etc, I dont want water to get into untreated areas.

With the Picklex, you dont have to rinse it off at all. You can weld right over it too.

I've never washed it off with water... When it comes time to paint I simply wipe the panel down with Prep-Sol or Pre-Kleano and spray away... This should be standard procedure before spraying paint anyway and I have never had a problem doing this.

I use Blue Lightning. They have a prep you do not have to wash off with water. Will keep the car in bare metal up to one year, and can be painted over. All it is is a phosphate coating and can be bought from several different companies that market their own versions.

keep the car in a dry shop and don't handle and it will last 6 months or more without rusting. My car has been in bare metal for over 6 months - the only places it tried to surface rust is where we handled it. I know several people that keep them for over a year in bare metal while metal working. Mine was blasted with silica - which seems to leave a bit of a "coating" on the car. I did use metal prep on some parts - didn't seem to work any better. I even used metal prep on one frame mount - nothing on the other and left them outside - the bare sand-blasted peice did not rust as bad as the peice with metal-prep, true story!
