The frustrating wheel search...

Ok, I've been searching for days, looking for wheels that I like, thats the easy part. Trying to find new wheels for old cars that offer the right bolt pattern AND custom backspacing is the frustrating part for me. I want OZ wheels, but can't find any info on if they make custom wheels, or just the ones they list on their site. I've seen the brands posted on here like HRE, CCW etc, but they are a bit out of my league price-wise.

Anyone have any good resources to wheel manufacturers that make custom wheels that fit our cars?

I have set of ADR 18"s for my Mustang,the biggest problem I found was the high + offset that all late model cars have. Spacers are the easiest way to overcome this,all new correct width suspension is anouther. Take your bolt pattern and covert it to metric..Fords are 114.3mm and search ebay like " 18" wheels 114.3" and see whats out there.Odds are you will find something you like.

yes, OZ does make custom offsets. Its very expensive. I've heard of people using the BMW wheels on older gm cars (which is 5x120.mm) rather than 5x4 3/4. This is supposed to be ok. some hub clearancing may be needed.

HRE makes great wheels for "our" cars as do:
kenesis wheels
simmons wheels
fiske

I never thought of spacers...good plan, the rearend I have is too wide for my car right now, so I can probably narrow it to fit the wheels I choose(kind of a backwards concept!) 4 3/4 converts to 120.65mm so will the 5 on 120's still work?

I love the HRE wheels, are the prices on their site pretty much the same price you'd pay at a dealer?

yes. they will work. many members here are running that exact setup with very little or no mods. .65 mm is very very little.

expect a pretty good markup if you dont by HRE direct.

I like this one from HP Racing....but the price is so cheap i'm skeptical! I found multiple sets of 18 inchers on ebay from a dealer for $610 buy it now price....??

have a look at my page... have a lot of info on BMW wheel fitment there (page 19 and later) I have sold the BBS wheels since I thought they were too far out with the spacers/adapters and they would hardly clear my C5 brakes...also would have to mill the center out for the long front axle....it all depends on wheel design...

I've seen a lot of guys with 4th gens running those HP Racing wheels. One of our moderators, Nine Ball, has them on his 35th SS. I haven't heard any complaints with them, but maybe he'll see this and comment.

Great info guys, thanks! Im happy to hear that others have used that brand of wheels, for the price they seem hard to beat. I can get all four wheels, with tires for close to the cost of one HRE wheel. I don't have a degree in economics or anything, but that doesnt sound to bad.

Did you end up getting them?

It just dawned on me, I dont even have my brakes yet, so I could get any bolt pattern pretty much, I did a search on ebay like you said and came up with tons of nice wheels, way more for the 114.3 pattern! Thanks!

.65mm = 0.01651 inches do you really think it cause a problem?
we put a set of 4th gen camaro wheels on my boss's 525 bmw and they bolted right up, the only problem was that a bmw does not like 8 inch wide wheels and 26 inch tall tires.
but it did look kinda cool

Vdaviemusclecars has that same HP wheel on his '71 Camaro. I think they are 19's too. They look great. I would hope that he sees this and shows some pics. I've seen the car in person, and it's outstanding.

Wow, I think that might have solved my wheel search. Those with an anthracite finish in the middle with the polished lip would look great.
Especially even getting my Boyd's at cost (which were stolen) they were still more than double that.
