In New York City For a Few Days

Hey guys,

I'm going to be in New York City for a few days and want to know what things I need to defintely do while I'm in town. Keep in mind that I'm going to be in town with my wife, so strip clubs are out of the question.

So far the plan is to take the New York Water Taxi around the city and view the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. I'll be staying a few blocks from Central Park, so I'll go there and probably go to Times Square. Are there any great places I need to go or eat?

Times Square, Little Italy, Empire state building, Ground Zero, Not Sure if ur into architechture but there are some pretty crazy old churches. HAve fun and make sure u eat some pizza at one of the small pizza joints, Its the closest thing to Jersey Pizza= The best haha

Chinese food at ollies. Visit exoticar on park 47th for some insane diecast cars, then walk up to park and 45th and get food off the cart that says "kwikmeal" on it. Best grilled tiger shrimp or lamb you will have for a while.Even the pizza truck on park has amazing pizza. Or take a cab to 118th and first and sit down at patsies where ol blue eyes used to go for italian food.Forbidden planet is a great sci fi and collectable spot. Grays papaya on 86th and 3rd,get a few dogs and a papaya juice to go..


Leave ground zero for the tourists.

Someone get Yao Ming in here--what a reach. NJ pizza better than NY? Never happen. You might be the first and only person in the history of pizza discussions to pronounce that contention, haha. In my [biased] opinion, the borough of brooklyn manufacturers the greatest pizza pies known to the human palet; although, a lot of the old shops have since moved. NYC still has better pizza than anywhere in Jersey, though.

I'd love to help with some locations, Tony, but I'm not too keen on the hot spots in NYC. I could help you with Brooklyn, but you'd probably want to avoid most of those neighborhoods, haha. Let me know if you make it out to Long Island.

Hit the double decker tourist bus. I think it's $40 a ticket, but you can jump on and off all day long.

If your wife is a little daring, and you're up for a dive bar, Hogs and Heiffers saloon on Washington and 13th

I think the wife & I are going to spend a few nights there too. Not sure when, we need to figure that our soon & get on it, it's gonna be cold here soon. Although maybe Christmas in New York may be interesting.

I think Susan and I had the most fun doing just that a few years ago. It was freezing cold and we always had the entire top of the bus to ourselves.

Thanks for the info so far. I'm actually in Newark, New Jersey right now. I leave for Bermuda today and I'll be back in a week. I'll be staying about 7 blocks from the park.

We'll check out some of the places listed here.

Since I didn't get Jersey Pizza I'll have to settle for some New York pizza.

P.S. The weather is great so far. It was 83 degrees yesterday! It felt like California does usually. Even the humidity was really close. The extended forecast when I get back is rainy, but that's okay. We brought rain coats.

I second Old Homestead! or try The Kobe Club or Palm for best steaks.

Lombardi's or John's Brick Oven for Pizza.

Ground Zero is sad, but everyone should visit alteast once and pay their respects.

Also checkout McSorley's Ale house - oldest pub in NYC

The Carnegie Club for cigars and cognac.

Spend a day walking around Greenwich Village and SoHo.

You can also ride "The Beast" a 70ft speed boat tour.

See Lion King, if you haven't already

Also, "Top of the Rock" is cool, and Rockefeller Center skating rink

Just go to The Original Ray's Pizza. Make sure it says Original Ray's Pizza then you know you're at the right one.

As mentioned above, check out Little Italy. There are two; one up in the Bronx, and one down in lower Manhattan. Hands down, Little Italy up in the Bronx is the better of the two. You can still see real Italians arguing in the Arthur Ave. Market and get some great food up in that area. Check out www.arthuravenue.com and www.ilovethebronx.com to get some ideas.

If you want a good place to go down in lower Manhattan, check out the Chelsea Market; it's at 75 9th Ave, between 15th and 16th Sts. They have a ton of fresh food, awesome bakeries, a great Italian importer market, and even a real Italian gelato stand. The Food Network Headquarters are upstairs, and Emeril tapes there, so you know it's got to be a great place!

Oh, and to fuel the NY/NJ pizza debate. I've lived in Jersey all my life and had some good pizza here. However, NY pizza is definitely FTW, because their water is much better. Their water in the dough is what makes NY pizza and NY bagels the best in the world!

I like puglia in little italy

FAO swarts is neat as with the west bound side of the Williamsburg bridge ( I was a field engineer for it) I also enjoy giving bums fortune cookies.
