Is this a good deal on a LS1?

I am looking for an LS1 and T56 to put in my 69 Camaro.. I came across this just wondering what you guys think..

1998 Camaro 52,000 miles complete with wiring harness and computer.. Comes with T56.

I'd say you can find a better deal. About a year ago (when I was looking) I saw similar setups go on Ebay and Craigslist for significantly less than that.

Honestly, the mileage is low, but it's basically the first year for LS engines, so I wouldn't pay more than around $2500, not including shipping.

Hell, looko around on ebay. There's 00+ LS1's with less than 100,000 miles, and they even come with trannies for less than that.

skeeter not sure where you live but there was ad on chicago craigslist for a 9k mile ls2 m6 with comp ..no harness for 5k...so that sounds hi for a ls1

You can buy a complete car for that price nowadays, I'd keep looking.

Also, you might want to stay away from '98s as they are the only year LS1 (actually, 97 vette LS1s are probably the same) to have center bolt heads. '99 and up is perimeter bolt. It's certainly going to be an issue when trying to buy ported or aftermarket heads.

read the sticky on general ls1 info. lots of changes were made in 99. for almost 5 grand id say you could almost score a GTO ls2 and tranny for that price. hell even an ls6.

That is backwards, but you have the right idea.

The worst problem witht the 98's is the heads are of poor design as mentiones, and the computer is a one off by itself pcm that is not as accurate or fast as the 99+ pcm's.

if you can try to score a 2001 and up ls1. they have the ls6 intake. other then that, try to find one with under 50,000 on it.

I picked up my 02 LS1 & T56 for $3800 with the exact same miles (48k), this was about 1.5 years ago. I found it in the buy/sell section of www.ls1tech.com you might want to post some wanted ads in thier forum and check the for sale ads there to score a better deal. Be weary of scammers as well.

keep looking you can get a better deal and you should be thinking about an ls2 not an ls1

99+ are center bolts. The newer heads will bolt on a 97/98 without a problem. You would have to get new valve covers which may not be a problem if you are planning on adding aftermarket valve covers.

The 01+ motors get the LS6 intake again this may not be a big advantage if you are planning on adding a FAST or 4 barrell intake.

The computers changed in 99 and is preferred but you can still tune the early PCM.

Also beginning in 01 the LS6 block was used on some motors which was vented better.

If the price was less and you were planning some mild mods a 98 motor is fine. I would not pay his asking price.

I paid 1500$ for my complete Escalade 6L motor with 50K on it, including the wiring harness.... My F-body trans was $300.....

Any more than that is pretty much a ripoff.... Parts only go one way when it comes to value over time....
