you might check out duponts "hot hues" they got one called hot rod black I believe. they also have some clears that cure to a semi gloss finish that you could put over any black base coat.

Waxing it is the key. Primer as you probably already know isn't the best idea, even if it's PPG's epoxy DP90.

Check with your local paint shop. Many times they can add flattener agents to the paint to get you the finish you are looking for. Just make sure you lay down your paint right the first time because you can't exactly wet sand and buff it out.

i used U-POL spray paint on mine..i know i know...but it cost me $45 for the entire paint job and it looks good enough for me. I'll put up some pics later.

there is also a line of colors from kustomshop.com called "Hot Rod Flatz"...good stuff there!

Just looked this up on Dupont's website and it states that polishing is not recommended as it will affect the gloss level of the paint.

StRacerDuke, can you enlighten us as to the waxing? Does this keep the car looking cleaner or blacker?

Point taken. However it's been three years of constant sun exposure and with Zoop's wax I have seen zero change between the exposed (waxed) and unexposed (unwaxed) areas. I sprayed the Volvo this spring and to hold the dragsters nose up to the Volvo they are identical. Zero change in sheen or "color". The original body on the dragster I shot with DP90, two coats of Omni Clear to bury a metalflake stripe 70 T/A style stripe, wetsanded and recleared with flattening agent added to the clear with a ratio of 5 ounces Fl agent to 10 ounces of clear. Much experimenting made it the perfect sheen. HOWEVER, the flattening agent DID make the black and 'flake look a lil milky. That's why I only used the "agent" in the final topcoat. It wasn't awful, looked great just not as natural as a single stage urethane. Dupont is the best for durability and "hold out". Jesse James had Dupont develop this product and with the time that he puts into a bike I would have to believe the standards of the top coat would have to match the quality of the fab work.
This pic was taken last month after three years of racing.

These aren't my cars, so I can't comment on paint codes. I just love satin black cars and my Firebird will be painted this way. I know BASF is making a new flattened clear called "Carizzma Flat." Check it out here: http://www.carizzmacolors.com/news.php

duponts single stage hot rod black works nice but is pricey at 125 a quart set up, S.E.M has a hot rod black to that is as nice at duponts at half price.
the ultimate is to use a reg black base, and a satin or flat clear, i use standox and they have a killer satin and flat clear, when done in a booth you have little dust and the longevity of a clear.
