SSBC Caliper Upgrade on a G-Body

Hey guys Im on a tight budget here but I still wont some better stoppers and show half way decent.



Do you think this will offer up some improvement over the stock braking?

Its the SSBC 'quick change' kit:

2-piston alum caliper and pads.

This coupled with drilled/slotted rotors - Would that give me stopping improvement with 17in wheels?? OR should I try to go to a bigger than stock brake/rotor?

drilled rotors won't help any and are prone to cracking. Slotted rotors will help on the track but you won't notice a difference on the street. The calipers may imporve your stopping power some, but you would be better off money wise to spend a few extra bucks and get a hydroboost kit. That will show a definite improvement in braking for just under $700. You would be spending almost that for the SSBC calipers and rotors with little to no gain.

I can get the 'Quick Change kit for about $400, add $150 for the slotted rotors. So $550 I have a little brake improvement and it shows good. Plus no hacking on the factory spindle.

Then there's the Wilwood kit where i can get a bigger rotor and stopper for $675 but I have to modify the spindle.

I like the idea of hydroboost... but on a stock brake setup?? Is that a good idea? I could always add it later knowing that the extra force is being applied to good parts.

After overheating my front and reat brakes at Buttonwillow, I up graded the front to the dual piston kit from SSBC. I also upgraded the rears to their disk kit and run 16" wheels. Brakes work great for what they are. If I was doing the track thing all the time, I would go to bigger and slotted rotors.

Unless you are standing on the binders at every stop, you won't hurt the factory components. Another and very cheap fix is to get some good pads like Hawk or similar. Pad material will make a difference is stopping ability.

Well I dont do the track thing.. mine is a show-touring car so I have to build accordingly.

SSBC claims a 15% stopping improvement with the 'quick change' kit.. plus I can run 15" wheels if I ever want/need to. That along with their rear 11" disc setup for about $825 should do me fine.
I think I just sold myself...heheh..

Anyone an SSBC dealer here?

It holds up great Tony just light washing when need be no fading because its the natural finish of aluminum and it looks more racey.

Tony, I just installed the SC&C Stage two kit im my SS last month and it handles like great. You'll enjoy the ride.

Cool! Actually I'm going w/Stage 1 and use the tall lower ball joint to get a slight drop.. that should do the trick and still improve handling w/o braking the bank.

I have Ed Miller working on a 12" setup to clear my stock 15" Olds wheels (Olds 15" wheels have a 14" center) that will use a C4 Vette caliper. It will require a 2 piece rotor to work without spacers, waiting to hear from him right now on the rotor requirements. Should be way ahead of the stock setup and even beat the SSBC's...

It'll be pretty much the equivalent of a Baer setup for WAY cheaper.
