Flat paint???

I have been trying to decide if I should go with a flat paint job. I was looking on the web and found Hot Rod Flatz. Its a company that sells really cool flat metallic auto paints in all colors. I just dont know if after all the work that I could go without a shiney paint job. Any thoughts?

I love the way flat paint looks but its very sensitive, every fingerprint and scratch shows up.

I have dp90 on my car. Very sensitive is an understatement. Everything leaves a mark. I went with a glossy stripe to set it off, that way people can tell I meant it to look that way.


/I love it anyway. I get more attention than most people with "real" paint get. It's almost not fair. My car's body SUCKS.

A little off topic, but I got a quart of Kustom's DTM epoxy primer and was really impressed and it cost less than half what I've paid for Dupont DTM epoxy primer.

DP 90 is really good epoxy primer. It Does fade, just slower. It's relatively cheap, and lasts a long time and has the perfect flat sheen that most "hot rod" paints are trying to mimic.

DP90 is killer. That has been my paint (ahem' epoxy primer) of choice. A little Scotchbrite is all you need for minor touch ups. lol...

Now I am going to go with a flat to semi flat clear when the car is done. That was it wont just sit there and oxidize for the rest of its life.

Check out Southern Polyurethanes! They have a comparable product. Joe VanNus who painted Dale Jr's car swears by these guys!

just a note you can add flattening agent to any color shade and brand. murda jobs are back in this year.

I know a guy who painted his 55 Chevy red with flames and cleared it with a flat clear,looks cool

Could not agree more!! When it come to the needs or restow shops SPI is the shiiiit. The clear is amazzzing you have lotts of time to cut an buff, does not get hard on you quick like other products. So it is so much easyer to work with.
All clears die back on the shine but SPI seams to hold it shine longer.
The epoxy is so much better than anything we have used lately an i used to swear by DP90
We have been using SPI for about 2 years now an love it!!
PS If you have a problem an call PPG who do you think you will get on the phone? Barry take all the calls himself. OH Barry is the owner!!He gives you his cell# when you buy his product.

my car is "satin" black. The finish is awesome and it gets a lot of attention. One thing is bad though...some wheel polish splattered and it is now in the paint and i am having the hardest time getting it out. Other than that it is great!!

DSE was using Hot Rod Black by Dupont. I think they changed to PPG products for this.

Does anyone else think this 'flat paint' trend will pass in a couple years, and flattened paint will become a trademark for cars built in 'this' timespan?

Will flattened paint be like day-glow stripes were in the '80s?

I, for one, will stick with shiny paint that hopefully won't look too 'dated' in 10 years.

I'm sure it will pass, but it will be back again. I for one say go with what you like and to hell with what everyone else thinks. Chances are in 10 years most people will have a different "project" car to work on. I know I will, I've had my corvette for 9 years now and I'm itching to sell it and build something else. Probably with flat paint.
