      Universal Wiring Harnesses

I have a question regarding experiences with universal wiring harnesses. I see a lot of offerings for wiring harnesses that seem to be chassis specific, as well as some "universal" ones, but just how "universal" are these? I have been interested in acquiring one from a company like PAINLESS, and there are some that advertise "Painless style" (eBay stores), but I am a bit leery of buying anything that is advertised as universal, yet the directions will be written with a certain make/model in mind. Why do I want one? Well, I do all of my own wiring by using FSM schematics and comparing them. In the advent of taking a car that has archaic chassis wiring or no wiring, the task ends up with me having to build a harness, and it is time-consuming. Sorry for being long-winded, but if you can make any sense of what I am trying to write and ask, I will definitely appreciate any help/advice you can impart.

I have used 2 Painless Universal harnesses, and though there is one bulk connector that shouldn't be used (it's not capable of the current loads) they have held up pretty well.

I understand AAW makes a very nice harness, but I haven't used one personally.

I used the AAW harness (Hi-Way 22) in II Much. Awesome quality, great documentation, incredible customer support.

Highway 22 is the only way to go and the most complete on the market. We use them and sell them.

Yup, another vote for American Autowire. Been using there stuff and selling it for exclusively in everything from our award winning restored Concourse original cars to our many Full on High End Pro Touring and Street / Drag cars. Mike and Frank (AAW owners) and I have worked together since they started in their garage some 20 years ago. Out of the 100s of cars we have done over the last 20+ years, Never a problem in all these years with AAW. Absolutely the best of the best. Wow! The Highway 22 option looks like the way to go for me, since I do need the extended options. Does it include an explanation of what the GM color codes are? You may be taken back by this, but I am an import guy who is learning/re-learning American muscle.

All the wires are coded with their intended destination

They aren't just coded, their purpose is written on the wire itself.

      Good stuff.

Stay away from EZ Wiring if they are still in business. Saving 1-200 or so isn't worth dealing with the poor quality product they make. I used them on my 64 chevelle about 10 years ago and wouldn't use them again.

AAW Highway 22 is the one I need. I don't need headaches or to find out material quality is substandard. Thanks, bros, for helping steer me in the right direction on which wiring to go with.

Ryan, I disagree with you on the EZwire kit... i bought one about a year ago and will install it shortly. great quality and very complete. Only thing I needed from the original harness was the bulkhead connector which I re-used with new connectors through AAW.

I pre-made most of it at home so the install will go quicker in the garage.
