I had read something a while back that said if you are pulled over the CHP has the immediate right to look under the hood & if there is ANYTHING on the motor that looks like it was added for racing purposes they can impound the car for suspicion of road racing & crush the car.

Yeah - locally the cops have been showing up at car shows looking for NO2 bottles. In MD you can't have them filled nor hooked up. Big ticket here if you are caught. Only a couple of "classics" on the bottle but lots of tuners running around on the bottle or acting like it....

I have a big problem with this sort of behavior by law enforcement.

Assuming this isn't just urban legend: who gets to define what "added for racing purposes" means? Shouldn't the state have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that that not only was something added for racing purposes but that there was intent to use it in an illegal manner before crushing the car? And ... doesn't the state have reimburse the individual for the value of the the seized property?

I got no problem with coming down hard on street racing. But ******* bully cops can really abuse this initiative.

JP - got to agree. Suspicion is one thing - caught in the act is another. But I can understand NO2. Its only function is as a power adder and its volatile as hell. But what about a larger fuel line or a 2nd carb, high rise intake, etc... All can be utilized for racing.....

As to reimbursment I think it falls under the same heading as getting caught with drugs in the car - your criminal act forfeits your right to the vehicle. But feel free to bid on it at the police auction.

If it was a completely restored Z28 Camaro, Boss Mustang, or a Hemi Cuda, (even if someone else's) how would you feel to see a piece of history crushed?

Do they crush the car of a rapist? A robber? Or even confiscate their belongings?

I'm not necessarily saying the owners should't be punished. But destroy the vehicle? That is B.S. (and I don't mean backspacing).

CA of all places should know better. How much energy and non-renewable resources does it take to build a car meant to replace the one they crushed?

one step closer to a police state. The "guilty by suspicion" policy in in EFFECT in toronto. They can pull you over, impound and crush your personal property on the suspicion that you'll use your car to break the law. Because lord knows, you *can't* break the law in a stock car either.

The other day I was driving next to someone on this site and for a second we were side by side going through the gears, if an overzealous cop said we were racing how could we prove we were not? (maybe cause the slower car was in front?)


I remember when we ran the bikes by the airport in the middle of nowhere,a trooper used to hang out and watch.Those days are over,probably for the best.

Nitrous oxide isnt volitile nore flammable. ITs simply an oxidizer and unless you add it to something flamable it will not burn.
Can the bottle explode sure, but for the most part after the B*&&$%#t scene in Fast and Furious have led so many people to get defensive and even mad about me offering to install N2O.
WE had a fella have fuel fire (bad line) and the car burnt to the ground with the fuel pump running and the firecrews never got close so a fell used a clod of dirt to shut off the master switch.
Ther bottles never "blew up",,, it didnt explode.
But the pressure relief did blow off at peak temps and it sort of actually blew part of the fire out as it leaned the fire out in the area.
Ill try to get pics of the car from a buddy but the bottles never "blew up" nore can N2O burn, not without a flammable fuel source.
Heck it cant be too volitile its used as an anaesthetic at dentists for dental surgery.
This is why they make nitrous plus, they add sulfur dioxide(smells like rotten egs) to it.
Heck didnt anyone ever watch A-team ,they stole a bottle from a dentist office and used it to hop up B. A. Baracus van so it was fast.
Heck pure oxygen is more dangerous than N2O.
As for a cop taking a car and consumately crushing it upon a "look" what makes him an expert?
That one is bunk and guranteed to get a cop/law enforcement agency sued for some serious green.
United States citzens are protected from illegal search and seizure, and they cannot violate due process either this is why we have judges and courts.
Now if they can place that exact car in a position of a clandestine speed contest then yes I would figure they could crush it but I wreally think it would be smarter and more painfull to see your work of art/pride and joy taken apart and sold to other people and the cash donated. THEN if the car is very bad crush the remains possibly. But this is a sorry state of affiars when they do that, A waste of tallent an d money for little gain as the diehard racers will still do it.

Even though I have never been into street racing and have only teased imports around here, I cannot agree with what they are doing. I have never been into imports and will probably never own one. We have to realize that these young guys are part of the automotive hobby and have put love and hard work into their cars with what little money they have. Street racing has been around since the beginning of the hobby. I think they should be punished and have their cars impounded but to crush your car is way too strict. PLus whos to make the call. I know every single person on this board has gotten on their car on the street at least once. Whats going to stop a cop from saying ou were street racing your 69 camaro and have it crushed when really you were just given it a little rap.

That's actually really scary that all it takes to crush it is the suspicion that your car's been built up for racing. What about the guys that build cars just to cruise and burn down the 1/4 mile every once in a while? And especially that they can crush it without laying charges or getting to the bottom of things or catching you in the act just doesn't make sense. The thing is I see so many of my friends with bone stock cars doing things in traffic that I'd never do. Nearly anybody can hit triple digits in the cars they build now, so to assume that just because you have performance equipment that you use it illegally is just wrong. My car can go 10 mph as well as it does 100 mph. The difference is me. Otherwise guns and tylenol are next under the microscope.....

Drag racing on a track is perfectly legal. So how do you tell if the street-legal car was built for racing at a sanctioned event? What proof does the state have that without reasonable doubt the car was intended for street and not a race track?
