changing backspacing at home, anyone??
This is a steel rally wheel. I am considering cutting those welds and adjusting the backspacing. I could realign it on our Hunter tire balancer and then weld it all the way around with a nice Mig bead. Its not rocket science, anyone ever do it? This would make some 325/50r15s MT radials fit on my Nova for the strip.

even if you could get it close to square you will still run into drum warpage. Rims usually have to be heat trued after welding the center chunk. On the other hand its a cheap rim to try it on.

Ive seen it done a lot in the rock crawlling world and it works fine but, thats no drag strip.

Im going to try it. I checked Stocktons site and they do it by hand. Cut the welds, adjust, check with a dial indicator, weld, check again.

I'd spot weld it in multiple places before running the full bead, should help with any warping issues.
Or at least keep them to a minimum.

Yes,you can do it.You will need access to a lethe large enough to mount the wheel and a dial indicator.We built the wheels for our Bonneville car.Over 320mph every summer.

I wouldnt do it on a computerized balancer, good way to burn out the balancer, they can be fussy even with voltage spikes through the line

Im not planning on welding it on the balancer. Apparently the center hub is pressed pretty tight into the outer and I should be able to spin it by hand on the balancer with a dial indicator on it. Then take it off, tack it a couple places, check it again, then weld completely. Thanks though, just like any car with computer, welding with the battery hooked up is going to cause problems
