      Need a Power Steering Box

I am in need of a new Power Steering Box for my 70 Chevelle. I am looking for something with a quick ratio to upgrade the stock box. I plan to run either a flaming river or ididit column. I would like to keep the cost down as much as possible on this piece. This will be for a street car that will never see any track abuse.

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated

i just had my box and pump upgraded by Lee Mfg. out of CA. I sent them my original box and they upgraded to quick ratio and they rebuilt the pump as well. Turn around time was 2-weeks. I just got it back today and have not reinstalled so i can not say yet about a difference in feel. I will say they did a beautiful job on the restoration of the cases. Here's their address:

Are there any smaller and or better looking steering boxes available?

We have AGR quick ratio boxes available. They are considered not to be as good as the Lee box, but are not as high priced either. I have sold quite a few with no issues so far and all happy customers.

I tried the AGR variable ratio and it was too slow for my taste.

93-98 Jeep Grand cherokee box. I have heard that Lee has a kit with the correct hose adapters and rag joint to adapt it to the stock column and lines. The box has a 12:1 ratio, they go pretty cheap on ebay.

I'd go with the 670 Delphi box 12:1 ratio, I just got my car back on the road and WOW!, Great feel, nice ,tight clean looking and responsive. Dialed back the pressure in my pump to increase effort. Lee is a first class operation and he'll take care of you.

We have our 670 boxes built for us by Lee Mfg. with a few upgrades and tweaks to the valving, tolerances, and steering stops.

For those that are planning road coarse track days I highly suggest discussing your pump options with Tom Lee. He can provide pumps that are better suited to both street and track days and not overheat like many do. Just slapping on a cooler will not cure the problem.

Are they cheap? No. Do they work? Yup.

Can you give a little more information on these pumps? I know you said to talk to Tom Lee, but I forgot that when I called them today. The person that helped me didn't seem to know about pump options.

Pro-Tour Heavy Chevy: What do you mean by "dialed back some of the pressure in my pump"? How is this done?

I did the power steering upgrade a couple years ago. Needless to say night and day difference for the better, but I was hoping for a little more effort to the steering. Thanks, Ozzie

The best way to increase the effort is by changing the torsion spring in the box.
Another option is to add caster (or is it camber-I forget). It will improve the handling and increase the effort required.

Depends on the type of pump you are using. For early stock-style P-pumps there is info on my website. For the later model TC (rolling element bearing) or CB (bushing) pumps, they too can be modded. Lee just finished mod'ing a CB pump for me that was a bargain at $85. I asked if a TC was needed, Tom asked the application questions, and said no. Tom is the guy you want to talk to. He's the man.

Changing pressures won't fix overheating. For me and the P-pump, it took a new pump liner. The liner is what determines the volume output of the pump. For stock cars that rarely see sustained high RPM usage the liner is large so that low-speed turning is easy, but the price is excessive re-circulated fluid volume and high operating temperatures at high RPM's. By reducing the liner size just enough to maintain good low speed characteristics + reduced volume means less overall heat generation. Tom also added a stronger shaft, made it a dry pump, and re-tuned the valving. 3 GPM @ 1450 PSI using approximately 1:1 pulley ratios. It works well with my hydroboost arrangement. Also note that reservoirs, filters, and heat exchangers were also needed to make it reliable.
