      Converter lock up question

I have a question about lock up converters. I know why and when converters are supposed to lock up, but I am not familiar with the mechanics of it. I have a 700R4. When I ordered it, I was told that it will come with a lock up converter and was asked if I wanted an electronic or hydraulic lock up. I choose hydraulic. I did not install the transmission (due to my lack of knowledge, space, and warranty issues), but the mechanic said it would be no problem to install the hydraulic lock up (he talked about installing or removing a “BB”…ball check maybe?). The problem is, when I’m driving down the freeway and am at a certain RPM, if I give it a little gas to accelerate the RPM increases initially, then immediately decreases and it feels like there is an extra load on my engine, then after the speed increase is reached (with in a few seconds) the RPMs increase and it feels like a load is lifted off of the engine. To me this seems backwards. It seems like I should be at a lower RPM while the lock up is engaged and when it disengages (while accelerating) the RPMs should increase. These RPM shifts happen quite often, even when I am going up and down inclines. Does this sound correct?

When locked up, it will always feel locked when working properly It does not unlock for acceleration. The release for the lockup in OD is to step on the brake (if controlled electronically). I have no idea about the mech. lockup type, but yes, revs should drop when locked.

Do you still believe in all the things that you stood by before? Are you out there on the front lines, or at home keeping score?
Do you care to be the layer of the bricks that seal your fate? Would you rather be the architect of what we might create?

I don't know why anyone would do the "BB" mod.
You basically remove the converter loc-up solenoid and drop a check ball into the tube. I can see where it's an easy mod, but will have issues of locking/unlocking at wrong RPMs/throttle positions. Better to spend a little more/take the time to do it right.

Electric is the way to go, but it takes more time to install the wiring.
I have used vacuum controllers (from mid '80s Chevy trucks) with good success on Quadrajet carbs. Holley carbs don't have the correct vacuum port for the controller, but usually do work with good results.
If all else fails, install a toggle switch so it can be engaged at cruising speeds.
Tranny damage can result if the lock-up isn't used. So make sure it's active one way or another.

if you install a toggle switch, be sure not to engage it when in 2 or 1st gear.
usually, the clutch that provides the locking isnt strong enough to take the torque that lower gears can provide.
you should only lock it in 3rd and overdrive

My 700's converter locks hydraulicly. My builder set it up that way and I think it works quite well. It initially locks after shifting third and is always locked in 4th.
