What will compliment my front set up?

Whats up guys. Right now I have the VBP trans verse set up in front and I wanted a good set up for the rear. This is on a 72 Trans am. I was about to cut up the rear to stuff some 335s by using relocation brackets but I was affraid it wont handle at all. Help me out. Thanks.

Right now I have the VBP front set up, rear sway bar and using 2" blocks out back. The car handles really good right now but Im waiting to really test it out at a auto X. It is a little stiff but not as bad as gets posted(middle setting). Im hoping to run a local auto X events and a couple of open track days. Not really trying to beat everyone at the track just have some fun without having to worry about the police.

If it was me, I would make sure the structure of the car is as rigid as you can get it so any tuning changes you make will be more consistent.

Next, if you don't have really good shocks, get some. I have ran four different sets and the Varishock double adjustables really bring out the best of the VBP system. In a little over a week of playing with the adjustments, it is amazing what you can do with shock tuning. Right now I am tuning it for the best street ride and handling, but I stumbled across some combos that were extremely sharp at low speeds and would have been what I would have tried for a tight autocross.

I would then get some double adjustables for the rear so I could tune the front and rear together. At this point I would autocross it several times to see what you needed.

With the tuning options on the front, especially with adjustable shocks, I would see where I was at until I got everything dialed in on the front. While tuning my shocks, at times I thought I needed a bigger bar on rear, a smaller bar, to its just right at the time being. Had I got in a hurry I feel I would have been chasing my tail. Keeping a log book of date and temp with shocks settings, I have been able to chart the effects of different settings and feel that I am starting to be able to predict what each change will do.

FWIW I spend a little time on Corvetteforum, mostly to learn everything I can about a transverse leaf system, but they are also really into handling as well. A lot of the principals apply to any car. Most of the posters there seem to run adjustable shocks so they can tune the car for different track conditions. They also like to dial things down for the drive to and from if it is not a dedicated track car.

What do you guys think of the Alston g bar set up with my VBP front.

I've looked at it and think it looks really nice. It should be very tuneable with the adjustable shocks and coilovers. I would also like to see DSE make their four link for 2nd gens but I don't know if it is in the works.

For my, I am going with composite rear springs and Varishock double adjustables. Depending how well that works, I may look at an adjustable rear sway bar as well. I like this as it is direct bolt in, lighter and more responsive and reasonably priced. I figure the total will be $1000 (500 for springs and 500 for shocks). I plan to do it in stages and get the shocks first and then the springs.

Hey Jeremy are you saying the set up your looking in to should be lighter and more responsive compared to the Alston g bar or to a stock set up?

Compared to stock. From what I understand the composite leafs are really light. It wouldn't suprise me if they were lighter than the two arms and springs on each side. I figure the shock weight will be the same either way.

Jeremy whats the part # for the shocks you got? Did you order them for your car? Ive read that the stock shocks wont work? I think it said I have to get shorter ones but that was some one on another forum so I dont know how true it is.

I couldn't tell you without looking at the varishock website. They are for a 69 camaro. You are correct in that they are shorter than the later 2nd gen f body's. I have come across some literature that 70-76 used a shorter shock but can't verify. I know 69 camaro's work great for length.

I am really pleased with the shocks. The adjustments can be felt and seem consistent. If I liked a setting, changed, and went back the setting s felt the same as before.

I am also back to running the rubber spring to arm bushings and the ride is much more forgiving and quieter. I lost a little bit of roll resistance with them but the lower impact harshness was worth it. I am already much tighter than the rear so it helped dial things in.

The best recommendations I can give on the VBP setup is to get quality shocks, make one change at a time and keep a log book. I feel that there is a lot of potential there but it takes some tuning. I also hit the same driving loop so I can feel changes on the same road.

There is only one bump in town that I don't like the response on. I get a little bit to much rebound coming out of the back side of the dip. Not bad, but more than I would like just because I am very picky. The wife doesn't even notice it. Compared to when I first installed the set up, it is night and day.
