How do I fix this type of steering slop?
You know how steering columns are made so they collapse in a major accident by telescoping? Well I took apart my gm steering column to find that there is slop where the steering shaft goes into its other half it telescopes into. It looks like there are 2 small nylon pins that go through it that I guess are supposed to shear off in an accident. How shall I fix this? Shall I try to heat the pins with a torch to melt the slop out? Shall I pull the smaller shaft out of the bigger one and slightly crush the bigger one in a vice? Or shall I weld the two together and take my chances if a major accident happens? Other idea's? Thanks
