      thanks

I just wanted to say thank you to everbody that replied. Alot of you may have swung me a certain way. I did not expect such a large response. I feel that not only will the military provide me with more knowledge, but I will also have the honor of serving my country. On another note I will let you know what I decide next week. My army recruiter was being kind of pushy he wanted me to do everything so fast. I walked in there on thursday and he wanted me to sign up on saturday. I didnt even get a chance to think about other branches of military. So when I told him that I wanted to wait a week to decide what to do he said that he would be going on vacation for two weeks. Anyway thanks again.

This is important: Remember that even though they're in the military, you are not! Don't let a recruiter hassle you! Take advantage of the fact that you are NOT a lower rank than them, and tell them exactly what you think, and ask all the questions you can think of.

I agree. Originally when I went to enlist, it was because of the Navy recruiter. My dad was ex-Navy. He did 9 years as a reactor operator aboard the USS Stonewall Jackson. So I was originally considering going that route. The Navy recruiter tried to do the same thing to me. He tried to rush me in to enlisting. Then when I told him I needed a little bit of time to think, he got all pissy with me and tried to guilt trip me in to signing with the Navy. At which point I proceeded to give him the finger (yes, literally) and walk across the hall to the AF office. Boy am I glad I did. My dad even thinks I made the better decision. These recruiters have no authority over you at this point. As was stated before, use this to your advantage.

Oh, and another little tidbit you might be interested in.... DO NOT enlist without having a guaranteed job on your enlistment contract. If they tell you they can't do that, it's b/s. I did it in 99, and they can still do it today. Also, do not let them put you in a "general" career field. For instance, if you let them put you in a general mechanical career field, you could wind up with a job fixing jet engines like i'm doing, to fixing vehicles or heavy equipment, or fixing the water pump that feeds the base commanders toilet. You don't get a say in the matter.

      Keep us updated!

      Another vote for USAF

I put in my four years (1990-95) as a Jet Engine Mechanic on the flight line at Wurtsmith and then Dover Air Force base. Hell of an experience working everything from B52's to C5's.
Of course I bitched about the food and having to share a room with another mechanic for the first two years. My last two years I had my own dorm room and my Camaro parked right outside. Not to mention those 5 am runs to the chow hall after staying up all night drinking. Yeah, it was rough.......
If you're a gearhead it's tough to find a cooler job than turning wrenches on the flightline regardless of what branch you're in.
Having said that, I have a tremendous amount of respect for the other branches of service, you just need to pick the branch and job that is right for you.

      decision

Well I know this thread is really old but, I wanted to let all you guys who helped me out let you know what my decision was. I joined the ARMY and got the job I wanted which was Black Hawk Helicopter UH-60 repair. The reason why I really wanted this job is that you not only work on the helicopter, but you are part of the crew and you fly in the helicopter. Its going to take alot of schooling and its a 6 year enlistment, but I think it will definatly be worth it. There was no bonus money, but thats not the reason I wanted to join anyway I could make more money not joining if I wanted too. The cool thing though is I got $71,450 for school and its all in writing. Thanks for all your help guys.

Congrats. You've got a good MOS. It's something that you can continue as a career in civilian life if you so choose. The oil companies used to pay good money working on their helicopters in Louisiana. Or switch to aircraft. A Airframe and Powerplant license is good on both. Good luck.

Wow, that is great you have a job you really wanted. The Army is great, I am a Master Sergeant(E-8) with 13 years in right now. I am currently in Iraq with less than a month left till I am back in the good ole USA. Where are you going to basic training at? I was a Drill Sergeant(DS) for 2 years, it was a blast, best job I have had yet. The first day of basic tell your DS you want him to take a picture of you wearing his round brown(smokey the bear hat). They get a kick out of that kind of stuff, you will be very popular the rest of the time you are there.

Good luck to you, just remember the first couple of months really suck, but the pay off is huge. You will be a SOLDIER, nothing better than that in the world.

If you ever end up at Ft Hood, Tx and need a place to work on your car or want to go to the track you have an open invitation at my shop.

      Hooah!!!!
