6" rods help to keep the cylinder wall pressure down. It makes for a better stroke to rod length ratio. This will make for a little more power and a little longer life on the motor.
As far as heads go they are really what can make or break the motor. If you are on a budget and cant affored say AFR 195's then try some of the Dart Pro 1's. We are getting a pallet of dart stuff in next week and can get you a good deal.
You will also need to pay attention to the compression of the motor. We normally shoot for about 10.5:1 depending on the cam and other factors. There is a lot to take into account when trying to build a motor to run correctly for your application.

02-13-2007 #2i have the vortec heads aleady, i might just put them on for now. i can build up the bottom end then later buy some better heads.
