How much did you pay for your engine package?

I wanted to put a feeler out there regarding engine packages and what all you guys with the big bucks are spending.
I figured a POLL would keep some anonomity and privacy for those that care.

Everytime I sit down to look at possible builds, I think the dollar amount is going up and up!
Personally, I'm sure I'll do an LSx but I can't decide upon cubes or a supercharger.

as of right this second I have... approx $5500 into my engine and fuel system.... I was given a 440 block - bought a stroker kit and pieced the rest together on the cheap (although using good parts)... the most expensive parts were the EFI controller and the fuel pump/filters...

gm crate 330 H.O. really moved the little s-10, and was enough to win on the street against everything other N/A car i raced except c6's.

fast enough for the forseeable future.

383 Stroker - $7K FOR 508 HP. And what I like is it bolts right in. No special mounts, headers, crossmembers, oil pans, etc. It is converting all that crap that keeps me from upgrading. Until I have the Disposable income, my Gen 1 SBC has held together for 7 years and 65k miles of abuse. If you don't have much performance gen1 sbc stuff then convert now.

      I'll be the Ford Guy

My little .030" over 302 made 361hp at the crank and with everything engine related, I've got about $6500 in it. That's including my SCP chip and dyno tune. I could have done it for about half if I would have ran a carbureter, but I have an issue with reverted backward in technology.

Before you LS1 guys bash my little Ford motor (OK bash away - GM's LS family is badass) - it only made 225hp at the crank from ford, so I don't think I did too bad for the money.

Comes out to $47.79/hp for every pony over stock. Total its $18/hp.

      OK- I'm done rambling

I spent more on my intake and rocker arms for the last motor than I spent on my first motor build when I was in college... I think I need mental help!

Well I got lucky and picked up a motor that probably cost $13-14k total to build for $8500. After adding an intercooler and headers I will be just a tad over $10k, but still I consider it a steal and savings of $5k+.

I've been looking for deals and buying parts for the past 3 years. 427c.i. Dart little M block, all forged, solid roller cam, stealth ram with a FAST wb controller and AFR heads. I'm almost afraid to add up everything I've got into it. but I'd guess a little under $8K for 600hp.

lets see, I bought a wrecked 00 T/A for $2800 sold the seats for $400, the Rear end for $100, the rear hatch for $100, the tail lights for $100, the fan assembly for $40, traded the shell for a t-56 and I still have the wiring, the ecu, the abs system, a 4l60e (which is for sale), and the LS1. $2060 not bad for a little horse trading.

Its the one motor I absolutely cut zero corners on(no compromises) and had some else build for me. Same for the trans, clutch, flywheel and shifter. Never do that again.

When I'm done buying parts I'll have about $5700 into the motor. That's for everything. LS1, mods, waterpump, power steering pump, alternator, starter, wiring harness.

Not bad for an all aluminum small block with a roller camshaft and fuel injection making around 470-480 horse at the crank.

Then of course, there's the extra money that most be spent getting it in the car and running. But that's another story.

Well folks i have been working on cars for over 20 yrs. I have never had big cash to put into any car I have built but have always got good comments on how my projects were progressing, but then I also had to also drive my projects and have never had a big dollar job. While I live in southern Indiana and it is much cheaper to live here I still have never had thousands and thousands of dollars to spend on cars.
Dont get me wrong but what I would give to be able to put into my cars completed just what you all start listing for engines.
If I ever got to put a complete engine together ,for my self, with all new parts and actually a no holds barred (so to speak) build I wouldnt know what to do.
Dont get me wrong i build engines for people and they have good luck but to let me, a sort of nobody, build a street or race engine rather than spend 10k to 20 k to put a top flight engine together, but I still have to sell my labor super cheap just to get the job.
Dont get me wrong I love to build engines but I know of a fella who paid 12K for a very similar build that i put together for 7k less. And I do know this builder is a dealer in all the same parts I used so I am sure he gets a better break on parts than I do.
Anyway I have always had to build on the cheap and smart, I have never had lots of tools or a nice garage, heck I have been a shade tree hot rodder for years,,,less the shade tree.
As I just lost my current job hopefully I can find one better suited to my skills or at least a better paying job.
Dont get me wrong my last job was good, I liked where I worked, who I worked with and all. But when you spend all your time working and not doing anything for your self ,creatively , is very hard. AsI always had aproject to keep me occupied and the creative juices flowing and the last thing I did was horse trading for some parts to up grade my 78 C10 to 91R model front end. And I have located another Monza to build,,,but its till sitting on the trailer, for the last 5 or 6 months.
But right now i have to get into a new job and get some money coming in.
For all of you that can afford to spend betwen 10k and 20 k on your cars feel lucky and appreciate what the cash can save you and provide you over having to scrape for the $100, not a $1000 or having to barter or trade for the parts you need to build your cars.
BUT i will say that the creative process of building a car has kept me sold in the community, I dont drink or do drugs or any such things but my father died before he ever got to see me actually build a very nice car (I built it right after he passed away) but again it was a budget build and still was an attention getter. But alas a blown tire had me loose control and destroy it.
Good luck to all and never take anything for granted and if you get the chance try doing something on VERY strict budget, ie more bang for less buck.
