Has anyone noticed the news stand copy being different from the subscriber copy? The news stand copy has a free Calendar in it with several PT Cars.

I haven't. I only look at my subscription copy.

PHR released a copy last year with the Mule on the cover with two different shots. One for subscribers, one for newstands. Maybe it was 2002.

I don't understand why they do that. Is that perhaps how they keep the subscription prices down by eliminating pages from the magazine that they send subscribers?

PHR has done this a few times since then also. I never realized until I started looking on the first inside page, the small "On The Cover" blurb at the bottom. This month (Jan) there were two different covers.

Two different matters. Publishers generally print two covers for testing purposes--to see which cover has more appeal. The two covers are not necessarily distributed in the same markets, so it's not really a matter of trying to sell two copies to the same person.

As for the calender, that's about money. The goal of the calender or other "polybagged" extras, is to generate increased newstand sales. You can blame the U.S. Post Office for subscribers not getting the extra perk. Subscriptions are generally sold at a huge discount off the newsstand price. Since the post office adds exhorbitant surcharges for the bag and the extra weight, publishers would go broke if they mailed the calender to subscribers. Sad but unavoidable.

Hmmm...good point Steve. I'd never looked at it that way! Come to think of it I think I only pay $10.00 a year for my subscription, so I better shut my trap! I know I hate putting even an extra stamp on a "puffy" envelope, much less a buck or whatever the cost would be for added shipping on the full blown mag with extras!

Yeah, I just re-upped my subscription to PHR and I think I'm gettin 3 more years for hot dog and can of soda. I guess I can't complain.

For sure Steve! I have been wondering why I hadn't received a calandar from PHR or Super Chevy. Makes perfect sense. I too will not complain but rather enjoy the low subsrciption price.
