      You decide..

Wheels went to Forgeline to get the fronts re-set for offset (due to the new C5 stuff). They found they were taken apart and reassembled badly by the previous owner (bolts WAY over torqued), so they asked me to send in the backs as well.

Also found that the center were painted and not powdered. Since the wheels are going to be taken completly apart I figured I might as well get them powdered in the center for more durability.

Can't get a metallic flat color in powder like I had so here are my choices.

Gun Metal - a charcoal gray metallic color. Is clear coated and shiny.

Carbon Black - Is a satin finish black. Is a bit more higher maitanace due to the nature of flatter paint (more poreus).

I have to replace the bolts as well. Standard 12-point chrome or Titanium with Jet nuts. The TI ones cost a bit more but shaves over 2-lbs off each wheel (at the outer edge of the wheel where it's more important).

So pick your favorite and help me make up my mind.. lol

Here's the site where you can see the stuff:
      http://www.forgeline.com/wheels/accessories.html

Ignore the Onyx Black.. it looks gray but I was told it's really just shiny black and hard to photograph

Call Budnik I was in touch with their powder coater who does some real nice matte metallic colors. I actually have the chips they sent me and they have a lite to med matte metallic that is killer. They are in CA somewhere. Nice guys to deal with and if it is good enough for Budnik you should be fine.

By the way the right urethane paint will hold up with no problems. I used to spray bike wheels all the time and even with mtg and balancing they held up perfect and that is with painted lips.

Powdercoating like paint is all about the prep. Neither should fail especially since there really is no wear on the face.

I have Forgeline wheels already.. My coater will do matte metallics, but theirs wont because they don't like how it holds up (shrug). They offered to paint the wheels, but I am a fan of powders for several reasons. One of them is chemical resistance.

So the four above are the four choices

I like the Gun Metal w/ Titanium Bolts . I think the finish would last longer.

Like anything else it would be nice to see both finishes side by side against the car but from the looks of the pictures, I like the gun metal with titanium.

      GM/Ti

The extra moola spent on the fastners is worth the 2 pounds. Do the math and 2 pounds at X diameter, at X rotation makes more and more sense.

I think the Carbon Black w/Titanium bolts has a more brutish, animalistic, and tougher look to it. Racier. Yeah, that's it. That's why I like it.

      GM with the Ti bolts.

Wonder how much the powdercoat weighs? I know on bicycles it can add .25 to .5 pounds to the frame weight, which is a lot for something that weighs 3-6 pounds to start. Probably not much for a wheel huh?

I've decided to suck it up and save the ca$h for Forgelines. I'm going with GM/Ti, but I promise it will be a different style Steve. Plus my car is a pile next to Penny.

At 17-ish inches from the center isn't like 7lbs of rotational mass?

I'm thinking the GM/TI .. maintenance will be easier and I really did like the gray look before. I dig the Milspec look of the black, but want to stick with the original gameplan. I think the replacing the Chrome bolts with the TI ones will help "toughen up" and offset the shiny finish on the GunMetal.

I would not use chrome plated bolts for fear of hydrgogen embrittlement especially if they have not been baked.

      From the site:

Premiere fasteners chrome are made from chrome moly alloy steel hardened to Grade 8 specifications. The are chrome plated and then baked for 4 hours at 375 degrees to drive out any chance of hydrogen embrittlement. They feature a wider Torx head for easy cleaning and give the wheel a very luxurious look. They are optional in Premiere Series wheels.
