I have fixed this before. The striker sits in a square recess in the jam.

      1) Drill 1//8 holes at the end of all of the cracks, clean the area up and grind the cracks open just enough to get a nice weld.

      2) Weld the cracks.

      3) Grind the weld smooth and spray with weld-through primer.

      4) Make a plate that sits in the recessed area.

      5) Weld in the plate.

      6) Grind, fill, and smooth the area to look good.

      Worked for me anyway!

I had to have that done on my old '85 SS. The striker plate cracked on your car (most likely) because you need to replace the pins/bushings in the hinges. Once those are worn, the door sags, and puts too much weight on the striker, causing the stress crack. Bill's repair sounds like a great way to do it!
