What I found on most BG Demon carbs, that arent full of machining trash, is that the idle air bleeds need opened up by at least 10 to 15 percent.
and that just to get it running, also most of them come with crap powervalves.
Also had to pull fuel out of the metering block circuit. Those metering blocks are really calibrated rich too.
Without serious retuning they come out of the box in that shape and unless you have a super hot engine you get a lot of extra fuel.

The engine did not - lost a rod at ~1200 miles on the motor

So the carb washed down the engine and wiped a rod bearing?
Sorry to hear it and it also happen to my buddy with a Mighty 825...took the engine apart before it blew.
