GM Performance Parts Serpentine Belt system - will it work?

      Hi,

I am wondering if the following kit will work on my Camaro. The engine is a 383 stroker GEN1 SBC... I am not sure what year the block is (does that matter). The engine doesn't have any of the accessories or a water pump, so if this kit works it would be perfect. Thanks for the help.

It will work fine, the only possible problem will be if you have very early cylinder heads with only 2 threaded holes for accessory brackets. Then you would have to drill/tap the head to mount one of the studs. If your 383 has aftermarket or post '70-something heads on it, you'll be fine.

Of course, if you're close to an auto recycler, you can buy the exact same setup off a junked '88-'92 Caprice or F-body for much less than that price. That's the same system I have on my car; scored off a totalled '89 T/A for $100.

I did more reading and it says that kit comes with a reverse rotation water pump. Is this kit expecting the pulley's to spin counter clockwise or something? Just want to make sure that this is the correct setup for the SBC.

By the way... these kits are going for about $150 used on ebay.

Yes, it does spin the waterpump counterclockwise, so you need the reverse rotation pump.

Ok. I was just making sure that it would work correctly with my old style SBC (for cooling, etc).

I plan to pick one of the used kits off of ebay and spend my money on an aftermarket pump.

Thanks to TPI Monte SS, with the money that I have leftover I can probably get a hydroboost setup!!!

The flow of coolant doesn't change, just the direction the impeller spins. This is because of the routing of the serpentine belt system and has nothing to do with it being a 1st gen SBC.

No problem man, that's what we're here for. I just cleaned my brackets up with brakeparts cleaner, then rattlecanned them with Krylon Cast Aluminum finish paint; looks stock and clean. I shot all the pulleys with semi-gloss black and put it all together. Chad is right on the money; the coolant still flows through the engine the same way direction, but the impeller is reversed inside the waterpump to account for the direction the crank pulley spins it. Here's a pic of my motor on the stand with the brackets installed.

You can pull the whole setup off like a 90 Camaro or Firebird and save $$$. I did that and smoothed out the casting flash on the large pieces, then had them all glass beaded ($14), then painted them with VHT CLear and baked them per the directions. Result - a custom looking matte finish aluminum setup that is very clean. Total was about $150 including a new belt. I did use a new Edlebrock aluminum water pump though which added like $100.

Or, you can also use 4.3 V6 brackets too. That's what I used for mine. You need to notch the smog pump lower bracket for use with a mech. fuel pump-no biggie. On my 1970 350 block, 6 of the eight holes lined up for mounting on both sides. Now, this is on a 3rd gen. Monte but to retain the AC, you can use the 307 olds or 3.8 Buick AC hose sets also. But then, you need to get the donor 307 or 3.8 condensor too since the inlet/outlet is on the pass. side. This only applies to G-bodies however-you Camaro will be different in this regard. -Jabin

There is a pic on this page of the A/C delete bracket thing installed, but the belt is not yet on completely.

any GM 1500, 2500 or 3500 with a small block will also work. there the same as the ones on the 4.3 in the S/T body trucks.

      yousef,

GM makes a serpentine setup for big blocks, but I find it's big, heavy, and rather ugly. You can use the small block setup that's being mentioned, but you will have to do a little bracket making. Here's the link if your interested:

There are many aftermarket setups that will fit big block Chevy's such as your Gen V, but they'll cost you a lot more.
