      msd location help

      Hey guys,
hope some of you can help me out.I'm building a 72'nova.I'm doing the wiring and I'm having a bear of a time tring to find a good mounting piont for my MSD 6al box.I dont want to mount it under the hood for two reasons.
      1) Ive been told the under hood heat is not good for the box.
      2) I dont like the look of it mounted to the inner fender or the fire wall,IMO it looks like an after thought and unfinished.

I thought about in the glove box but this car is going to be driven alot and the glove box will be used for things like regestration, insurance card, etc.I wont be using any plug in modules like the two step or soft touch rev limiter. The engine is a 406" small block that dyno'd at 420 hp@5250 and 498ftlbs@3200 ,so the motor is no slouch.I thought about mounting it in the trunk but not real sure as to the lenght of wire and if i need a certain resitence in the wiring.Oh yes the car has the origanal bench seat, not sure if i will put buckets in it or not.The interior has all been redone and not sure if i want to change it out.I like to think of this car as pro-family touring.Any help would be greatly appreciated
      Thanks,Greg

If I remember correctly, there is an intermediate bend between the firewall and Trans tunnel, which would not be too visible but still yield easy access. Plus if you do put in buckets you will probably do some sort of console and then it is totally hidden.

On novas I like to put them in the cowl, below the blower motor, in the fender behind the original battery location and on the firewall if it has a cowl hood.
I wouldn't recommend interior due to lack of air circulation.

      Mr.Quick,
When you say in the cowl ,below the blower motor,do you mean between the fender and the lower part of the cowl where the fire wall meets the side of the cowl.
Also, where on the fire wall do you mount the box to make it look good. The car will have the DSE fire wall plate with the vintage air set up latwer this winter.
As always you have been a big help.
      Thanks, Greg

In the cowl where the wiper transmission runs, or at the blower area right above the inner wheel well, you can still reach it but its out of sight. no problem, any time.

The only time this is true is if you're mounting it directly next to the headers. Otherwise, on the firewall is pretty optimal. You do get good airflow over the box and it's close to the distributor. It keeps your ignition system together. I have spoken to a couple guys at MSD and that's the spot they recommend. Just don't do under the dash. Not enough airflow at all. Basically anywhere under the hood is good, just not next to the headers.

I bet they do recommend it out in the open on the firewall. If they had their way they would tell everyone to mount that ugly @ss box out in the open!(Free advertising) Sorry for the rant but I really do not like MSD and it really kills it for me to come across a nice car only to see that stupid thing hanging off the firewall or the fenderwell.

Think what you may, but it's really one of the best spots for it. It will get plenty of air coming across it to keep it cool. It's not all about advertising. You could always just hide it under the fender, anyway. The only time I'm disappointed in that stuff is when the wiring is a friggin' rats nest and not routed in any way at all.

This isn't at all a grat pic but can help you see what I am talking about. Mine is mounted vertically on the driver's side of the radiator support. This keeps it easily accessible but out of the way since most people look under the hood from the front it is out of sight for the most part. Please ignore the pepboys overflow tank. Needed in a hurry to pass tech at the drags one night.

My MSD box is located on the passenger side, behind the battery as shown in the attachment. I don't know if it is a good location, but It has been like that since I bought the car.
I think there is too much stuff under the hood that makes the engine compartment look messy..
