I'm no expert but I have a friend who owns a car audio store. They do all there custom trunk work out of 3/4" mdf. The problem is the majority of these vehicles are not performance driven and mdf is really heavy. If you've ever lifted a 3/4" piece of mdf you know what I'm talking about. You could use 1/2" if you braced it well but it would still be pretty heavy. Also what are your purpose with the panels? Is it just to tidy things up or are you planning on putting anything in them( for instance speakers, cd changer, etc). If its just to tidy things up this best thing I think would be hand fabbed aluminum backing then cover it and it would be really light. Otherwise maybe 1/2" mdf or plywood and if your planning on putting things in it you might consider sticking with 3/4". Like I said though I'm no expert and I know theres some people on this site who are, maybe they will chime in sometime. Hope this helps a little.
