1970 Camaro 427 LS1 Project
It ‘s hard to believe, but our portion of project 1970 Camaro LS1 Swap is complete. The engine will soon be off to another shop where a PTE-88 turbo will be strapped to the front. Here is a brief wrap up and specs on the project.
The Darton MID Sleeved 427 was acquired from Steve at Race Engine Development.

The customer opted to spare no expense and we installed a Callies Race Master 4.000” Forged Crankshaft, Howard Specialties 6.125” Connecting Rods, and Custom Diamond Pistons.

We had the rotating assembly, and windage tray Teflon coated by our good friends at DART Machinery.

After we received all the items back from coating we began the installation process. At this time the customer decided to go for the show car look and have the oil pan, front cover, and rear cover powder coated glossy black. As always Bill at QC Coatings was up to the job, and everything came out excellent.

We topped this stout short block with ET Performance 255cc 11 degree cylinder heads, Morel hydraulic lifters, Comp Cams Pro Magnum Rockers, and a ported Edelbrock Carb Style Manifold.

Future plans include Accufab 105mm Elbow, Wilson 105mm throttle body, and Big Stuff 3 Unit

09-26-2006 #3Did you have to modify the comp rockers to work with the ET 11 degree heads? Reason I ask is I have a set of bolt on Harland Sharp 1.7's and a set of ET 215's with 11 degree stands on order and want to know if they would work with eachother.
BTW that is one kick ass motor!1969 CAMARO RS

We did not have to do any modification to the rockers at all, but we did have to modify the guide plates.

I saw that thing going together when I picked my engine up. The pictures don't do it justice.

ViperBlue68,
There is nothing value and or budget about this build. The Darton MID Sleeved block is half the price, if not more of the whole Katech short block. The engines are definitely two different animals, and as I stated previously the customer spared no expense on this project. I would estimate 18-20k in the engine portion of this project so far.
02 Silver Z,
Yeah the customers attention to detail really paid off on this project.

We have a less expensive version of the 427, but it doesn't have all the bells and whistles like this one.

Very nice, these 427 LS motors are getting very popular for very good reason. Is there a specific reason that you chose the ET heads over the LS7 heads? I'm in the research phase of a very similar motor for our shop 70 Camaro, trying to get opinions, etc. What cam did you end up using? The Callies stuff is super nice, I have their lower end Dragon Slayer unit in my 69 Camaro, and even that was a really sweet piece.
By the way, what are the rest of the plans for the car? We have some very interesting suspension components in the works (rear setup is ready to go, front stuff is being fit up as I write this) that will compliment that motor perfectly. If your customer is interested, I'd certainly appreciate a contact (pm, or you can get us through www.lateral-dynamics.com as well).

No specific reason we went with the ET 11* heads of the LS7. We have used the 11* heads in the past and were happy with the results, so I guess that had something to do with it.
As for Callies products, we use them on all or our higher end/higher horsepower builds and have never been disappointed.
