Does fitting an anti roll/swaybar stiffen the ride not just going round corners but driving in general

I expected the corners to flatten out and stiffen up, but I did not expect the total axle stiffness in general to go up as much as it did. My car had no rear bar, and I installed a Herb Adams 1" on my 71 years ago and even driving straight I felt it, especially on slightly uneven surfaces or bumps. I may be wrong, but it felt like when one tire hit a bump the other side took some of the hit too, in other words, the one tire that hit the bump was getting help from the spring on the other side through the sway bar, which made it feel stiffer. Either way, it was well worth it.

That's what an antiroll bar does, it connects both wheels. A one wheel bump will be fed to the other wheel to a greater degree, but total axle stiffness as you call it is not really increased, just shared on a one wheel bump, a two wheel bump across the axle won't be any different than without it, but there may be some bushing friction from the bar to consider.
