Suggestions for cam position sensor (SBC)

I want to run a sequential EFI system on my car, so I will need a cam position signal.
The way I see it I've got a couple options: MSD 8514, or modify an old distributor.
Obviously, the MSD is the quick and easy way, but the price is a little bit of a deterrent.
I've got an old dizzy stripped down right now, and could make up my own sender, but the sensor is one of the things holding me back: I'm not sure what to use.

Has anyone made their own, or should I just spend the extra $100-$150 to keep my life simpler?

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I am going with a distributorless ignition system.

EFI69Cam, I thank you for your input. I did some searching, and you have probably hit on the least expensive and simplest solution.

For those who don't know about the parts I have looked at, the MSD part is the least obtrusive part, it has the oil pump drive, and just above the distributor clamp it has a position sensor.

The Vortec distributor is a little higher, and then has a cap and rotor, but just below that, where a standard distributor would have a signal mechanism it has a position sensor and "flag."

I could remove the rotor and maybe make up a cap that goes right over that area to make it all look cleaner and it'll be almost as clean as the MSD unit, but the cost will be about half.

Even if I'm lazy and don't make that cap I'll still have room, even with an EFI intake.

There is a cover that replaces the cap on a vortec dist. There were 454s that used a 24x crank wheel and the vortec dist as a oil pump drive and cam sensor. If you want I'll dig up the part # for you.

I'd appreciate it. I've got a Vortec distributor on the way as we speak.

Now I'll have to see if it'll work on my engine. I found out that my serpentine belt system needs to me modified slightly because the heads have been shaved a bit and now the holes in the heads and in the block are too close. I'm hoping it hasn't dropped the manifold too much.
