07-14-2006 #2You could get great performance out of any 500 Cad with very, very little work. A caddy engine is similar to a BBF (I think you can actually use a BBF intake with the heads ported). You only need to spend money on the heads, cam and intake. You won't believe how it wakes that beast up. You can use stock parts for everything else pretty much. Serious bang for the buck.
The engine I'm using came out of a 75 Eldorado (rear oil pan)....talk about extreme hood clearance. The intake runners actually go uphill into the heads! With an aluminum intake from Edlebrock you're adding 3.5" to the overall height. I've seen these things in VW Beetles, a Chevette, and even a Nash Metropolitan so it'll fit yours. You could probably build a far superior and more durable 500 Cad engine cheaper than a tuned out, high winding SBC.
Here's a forum I belong to that a member on this board told me about recently. Ask these guys anything they are extremely helpful. http://www.cadillacpower.com/forum/index.php.
MTS is also a great source for parts www.500cid.com
