Man.. I love old junk yards..

Spent yesterday at a place called Memory Lane in Wilmington, CA.. they specialize in musclecar and old car salvage. Some cars are sold whole but many are parted out.

This would make a cool project car.. the trunk is so super cool.. a Rambler Merlin

Another cool car.. and it runs (has a rod knock).. a '68 Fairlane.

Just piles and piles of cool cars.. it was like a toybox for gearheads..

      Where is wilmington?

The Rambler MARLIN's are pretty cool. There is a guy that works at the AAA office near my house that has one.

why? why do they stack cars on each other? Its impossible to get to the upper car to pull parts safely. Its hard on the lower car, bends the frame sometimes. Will they never learn? My dad owned a wrecking yard my whole childhood, up till I was 19. We had racks to put cars on.

They only stack a car on top of another car when the bottom one's roof is trashed already. They have big equipment there and have no problem moving cars around. Also many are on "racks" that support them. The one's stacked are not destined to be sold as whole cars, only parted out. They have been around for decades, so I trust they know what they are doing.

That is whrere I bought my subframe after I cashed the Camaro 6 years ago. This was when they were in Sunland. I saw that they moved a little while back.

Tony, don't worry about pulling parts from the top cars. You are not allowed to there. You walk through, find what you need, tell them and they pull it for you. Most bottom cars are trash when they get them.

nope you guys are missing the point. Stacking cars is dangerous. To the employees, not just "pick and pull" guys. (we never allowed that. we always pulled parts for the customer) we had a guy "sammy" that was pulling an alternator from a top car without taking it down, and he fell, his leg pinned between the radiator and engine and broke his leg OFF at the knee. o. f. f. off. Needless to say, OSHA had a feild day. we got racks after that, for the stacked cars, (usually halfed) and smashed a bunch of cars to make room.

      even "my" black 69 charger. : (

Many stacked cars don't have drivetrains.. and they do have racks in one section. They did just move in a month ago and are still getting sorted. The stacked cars they had seemed pretty stable..

      Anyways.. got rust?

Here's the rustiest car Ive ever seen in CA.. they charged the guy $200 to haul it away.. lol. Was so bad the doors fell off during transport.

Sadly, that yard is soon to be no more. I was just down there last week looking for hood hinges for my 442. Fortunately they are the same as on '69-'70 Delta 88, because they had already crushed all of the A-bodies. They bought out another smaaler yard and moving there though. Apparently they decided to save mostly Mopars, which is too bad for me. I had good luck in that yard though; the 455 that is in 442 came out of a Toronado in that yard.

Desert Valley is actually just a few miles down the road from me, but after they quoted me $1200 for a big car Olds 455 I decided it was worth the drive to Maricopa.

Man you guys have it so lucky out west. You would never find a yard like that around here.

There is a yard local to me that has cars stacked three and four high. In some cases the smallest car is on the bottom. I swear you can actually see the piles swaying in the breeze.
It is my opinion that the owner/operator has the yard so he doesn't have to do any real work. His "employees" work there for the same reason. The yard is without a doubt the worse run yard I have ever seen.
