1965 Mercury Comet Project

Hi all,

I previously posted on the new members message board about my 65 Comet project. Now that it's underway, I plan to give regular updates on this thread. Any comments, advice, guidance, criticism will be much appreciated.

As I said in my prior post, I wanted to do a resto-mod project for a long time, and I finally hired a shop to do all the work. I've been pretty ignorant about cars in general, but I love to learn about them and have been doing all my homework since the project started.

So far, we've decided on the following: (1) New Ford crate Mach 1 4.6L DOHC engine; (2) Art Morrison Max G chassis (with all related suspension, brake, and steering components); (3) Intro Ram 5 wheels (18's all around); (4) BF Goodrich g-Force KDW tires (225/45/18 in front and 255/45/18 in rear); and (5) black exterior and all new interior (details still being decided).

The disassembly of the car has started and it is getting soda-blasted today. I've attached some pics of the car. The first pic is the way the car looked when we bought it and the last one is its current state. More pics can be found on the shop's website:

I also wanted to say that the shop, Woody's Hot Rodz (outside of Cincy), has been absolutely great. You should check out their other currect and past projects -- they do some real cool work.

I love those things. My older brother once owned a 65 Comet GT with the 271hp/289 & 4spd.

I live about 5 minutes from Bright, IN. I've never talked to the guys at Woodys, but it looks like they do good work.

It sounds like a sweet setup. I've been wanting to build a unibody car on a Max G for a while, but I've got too many other projects to finish and not enough money! I'll be looking forward to seeing some build pics of the project.

I'm jealous!

Clint, Thanks for the response. I took a look at your links and they all look great (I especially like the 69 El Camino -- very sharp)!

Brandon, If you get a chance, you should stop by Woody's and talk with the guys. Chris is the owner and he is super nice and very willing to give ideas, etc. By the way, all your rides look great and I really like the 67 Chevy II SS (even is it's not a Ford/Mercury)!

Not sure how late in the evening the guys at Woody's keep at it. I'll post a pic of the Max G chassis when it comes in. If you want to go over to the shop to look at it in person then, let me know . . . I'll be happy to ask Chris if there is an evening where someone will be at the shop.

I'm in Bright pretty often, so I'll just see if I can catch someone there. I'd love to see the chassis in person when it comes in. I might have to wear a bib so I don't drool all over it!

Awesome car! I've allways loved those cars (Comets & Falcons) and hopefully we'll see more of 'em. Kinda reminds me of my old '67 GTX, but smaller.

Wow... these mid '60s Comets are getting pretty popular as pro-touring/restomod candidates. There are a couple on the forum now and a couple have shown up in magazines lately too. Sounds like it may be the last chance to get one for decent coin before they go all '69 Camaro on us.

BTW, you might dig these pics... The top one is a photochop I did for a member of the forum. The other is a car done by the guys at Blue Moon.

Thanks, Wyatt -- I agree that the Comets are beginning to gain more recognition. I also think that what's interesting about the car is that there is a huge difference between the Comet's look from year to year. The pics you posted are cool (I already had seen your photoshop from the other thread) -- my guess is that they both are 1964 models? If you look at the early 1960's models to the early 1970's models (like CometChick's badass 1973 Comet GT), there is a huge difference in the look of the car. My favorite, of course, is 1965 -- first year the car had stacked headlights (while losing some of the older looking trim and fins) and before the lines of the Comet became more rounded (which started in 1966). Hopefully, my 65 Comet restomod will get others interested also.

Kaiser, I agree that the Comet reminds me of a smaller GTX -- I have always thought they had a similar look.

Andrew, thanks for your comments. I checked out your Nova and it is awesome -- very clean lines, but also with a real mean look to it.

No real update since the Comet was soda-blasted. In case anyone cares, attached are photos of the wheels (Intro Ram 5) and steering wheel (Budnil Famosa) that we've selected. Pics are from the companies' websites -- I'll post pics of my actual products once they get delivered.

I kind of like the rareness of my Comet. The 64 is my favorite with the side by side headlights. That chap really jumped the gun on me with that Maroon Comet. Still cant figure out how the rendering you did for me Buddha is exactly how Blue Moon completed their car. It is nice to see it come to fruition though. Just have to come up with some new, more creative ideas. I just hope the Comet popularity doesnt get too out of hand. I like driving something that not very many folks have.
