Redoing my garage... Give me some idea's, show me yours!

Hey guys,

Car is getting stripped and then will be sent out to be with the body man for a while. In the mean time, we are wishing to redo the garage completely.

Plans so far are:



-UCoatIT the floor
-car hoist (we have 14ft ceilings)
-Run 220v
-Integrated air system in the walls
-wall rack system (ie. GarageTek)
-some sort of workbench/storage system (ie. GarageTek)
-various auto related art

I really want this to be a cool hangout/car garage setup.

I was wondering what people are using out there? Show me what you have so i can get some more ideas.

I'm kinda cheap, but in my opinion the GarageTek stuff is over priced. But if it keeps the Mrs. happy then it's worth every penny.

I second what chet said, garage junkies is a great site. There is alot of debate on u-coat-it over there. They are a local company to me and are car folks so I'm partial to considering them for my own floors this year.

check mine out at mikesmustangs.net. I ran the air with copper tubing in the floor with 4 connectors arround the garage. Lots of electric outlets including a couple 220's. I coated the floor too, but am glad I didn't pay alot to do it. If you plan to weld, grind, etc in your garage, the coatings will get trashed. I'd also make the dimensions with at least 10 feet on either side and front of the single or double car size. I wall seperating work areas for cars and storage for cars would also be in my next garage. Good luck!

ucoatit & garagetek are pricey, or maybe i'm just cheap.

i went w/ epoxyshield instead of ucoatit. home depot carries it. they stock the water-based version & can special order the solvent-based version. i ordered the solvent based & it suprisingly ended up being cheaper than the water based. donno if they screwed up the pricing or not. you can get 10% off home depot coupons on ebay.


i'm building a garage/wood-working-shop, & will be building my own storage. i haven't shopped around for storage systems, but have looked @ garagetek & they just seem way overpriced.

the best prices on lifts i've found are @ http://www.americanautomotiveequipment.com , if you get on their mailing list you'll get sale prices every couple of weeks.

Must haves IMHO:

Slop sink
Compressor
Sky lights - if its possible
TV and Stereo
Recepticles every 4' or so
Modine - Hot Dawg NG heater or sim

Consider:
Building your own bench - big $$ savings
VCT Tiles - Vinyl Composite from Armstrong, their commercial floor tile like you see in Walmart and such.... Very durable, very inexpensive, if they get dirty or destryed you can just pick up the bad pieces and replace, you can also get that checkerd board look

I'll let you know about the u-coat-it this summer.

Best thing I did so far was have a sub panel put in. I ran all the garage circuits out of it. No more runnning inot the basement if I trip anything. #2 was lots of lights & storage.

Notice the yard sale halogen mounted on the loft frame. See swtich next to street sign.


Built these shelfs out of scrap 2x4s. None of them reach the ceiling. Screwed them together to make 4x4s, ran slots every 18" for moveable 2x3 plywood shelves. Disregard the mess in front of them


This little rack I got at Lowes. I store all the big cardboard we get there. That stuff comes in handy. Currently, the upper & lower valance of my 77 sit atop the cardboard.

In my opinion, what you use on the floor is REALLY important. Some of the cheaper brands will lift simply by parking a car that has the tires up to temperature. Also, many chemicals will cause the paint to lift as well...do your research. I had my buddy do my garage floor with same products used in airplane hangers...extremely durable and chemical resistant. Not cheap but well worth it. My floors were done in 1999 and I have ABUSED them, yet they still look great (when clean).

no. it's a garage/shop. should have explained a little.

-30x50 garage w/ attached 30x30 carport w/ 16x80 attic
-single bay is 2 cars deep w/ 10x10 paint/finish/clean room behind the 2nd car
no electrical switches/outlets in finish room. lights are recessed above plexiglass. unsure how i want to vent the room yet.
-behind the double bay is a 35x20 workshop.
-behind the garage is the carport
-attic space above will be storage & eventually a couple of bedrooms
-walls are 10' tall to allow room to maneuver 8' lumber & add 2post car lift. added extra 4" of footing under pad for car lift.
-plumbing for air tools throughout
-air compressor & vacuum system for wood tools are enclosed under stairway so i don't have to hear them.
-lots of lighting
-8" walls for lots of insulation & insulated doors/windows/garagedoors

I looked at doing my floor with U Coat It, but I ended up having a pro do it. Surface prep is key and to do it right, the concrete must be shot blasted or surface-ground. Here's how mine turned out and it's been down for 2 years with no lifting of the top coat....
