Track Wheels that fit over big brakes...

Problem:



Would like a set of wheels to mount slicks/sticky road race style tires on. Would like them to be reasonably priced (< $350 each), as light as possible, and be able to fit over 13 or 14" C5 rotors on the new ATS spindles.

It doesn't make sense to me to mount slicks on super expensive forged wheels like Fikse, Kinesis, HRE etc...when you want to take the car out and bash it on a road course. It seems like it would be way too easy to mess them up. I'd rather save those for the less sticky road tires that look cool, and wear decent to ride on the street with.

Surely someone makes a racing style wheel that is relatively light, in 17"-18" sizes with good backspace range, and isn't super expensive.

Options? If there aren't any, I see a good business oportunity!

I was thinking the same thing about mounting some slicks. The best I have found is the "soft 8" steel wheels that Summit sells. I have not checked prices recently but I believe it is under a 100 dollars a piece. And this is a 17x8 or 17x9 wheel in with an a body bolt pattern. Although they dont list backspace. Hope this helps some.

You might check out CCW wheels. Light and not that expensive.

I did check out CCW, but their wheels are in excess of $500 each for the least expensive model. Nice though.

The steel wheels (soft 8) appear to be mostly for trucks in the larger sizes, and don't have the offsets that would work on a first gen.

I thought to consider the billet ralley style wheels from Wheel Vintiques. Not sure how light they are though. Pollibly the new style weld wheels will prove affordable.

Any other ideas?

wouldn't you be better off with c5 or 4th gen camaro takeoffs and spacers than going with steel wheels? The spacers will add weight, but not a lot of MOI.

I checked with MRT Wheels http://www.mrt-wheels.com/ and they can make a 17x10 for $149.99. They don't stock the centers with a 5x4 3/4 bolt pattern so it would be a 60 day lead time to build them. They don't show these wheels on thier website, but Brant Chenoweth from there e-mailed me and said they can do them.

I don't know the weight or specifics. But if you get any other information please pass it on to us.

I agree, look for a set of Z06 take offs or even regular C5 wheels, should be reasonably easy to fit and will look great.

CCW classics are great wheels any way you shake it, even at $500/pop an awesome deal.

keep an eye on ebay, you can sometimes find ccw's in C5 or F-body trim for KILLER deals around there.

the c5, or gen 4 camaro wheels sound like a decent idea. those aught to be easy to come up with, look good, and be at least a little light. the light steel wheels sound good too if they can make the right size, and they clear the brakes. How thick a spacer would probably be necessary on the camaro or corvette wheels? I thought on a C5, they used stock 17s on front, and 18's on the rear. Anyone know the stock backspacing/offset?

i'd be cautious running a spacer on the street let alone the track. anyone running spacers on the track that wants to chime in.
ive considered using vette wheels on my car but the spacers are the only thing keeping me from it.

Adapters not spacers. Search about adapters here. Several people are running them including myself. For my Z06 rims I am running a 2" adapter in the front and a 2.125" in the rear.
