'67 Camaro Penske-Donohue tribute
My original thread: https://www.pro-touring.com/threads/...aro-SCCA-build
Build blog: http://www.rhoadescamaro.com/build
Mark Donohue's "Unfair Advantage" is my favorite racing and non-fiction book of all time. Upon reading felt myself wondering, "what would it have been like to drive their winning Trans-Am car back in the day?". This build's purpose was to answer that question.
Bought in 2010, multi-year frame-off resto/mod to SCCA Street Touring ruleset (not stock but still relatively strict/stock by Pro-Touring standards)
Color is Porsche "Dalmation Blue" which was the best guess we could do at Sunoco Blue, it's a tiny bit purple in some light
Original California car, had almost no rust (tiny bit around rear window, was repaired)
Campaigned nationally in 2013, best result was trophying in STX at the Pro Solo Finale.
In the years since, replaced the motor-
CNC Motorsports 302 short block (Dart SHP block, forged Eagle crank and 6" rods, Diamond pistons)
AFR 180 heads
Mike Jones cam
Pro Systems carb
Simplified modern accessory drive, Meziere electric water pump
Probably 400hp?
External oil cooler and Accusump plumbed in
Aluminum C&R radiator
TKO-600 5 speed with tall 5th gear
McLeod RST twin disc (smooth and easy as stock)
4.88 rear gear replaced with 4.10, still in the GM 12 bolt axle
Replaced the fiberglass leafs with Global West multi-leaf steel
Custom lower control arms with coilover mount point moved outboard 1" (made a huge difference in motion ratio)
AST spindles and upper coilover mounts
Split brake master cylinder with balance bar. Currently manual, have a booster
Front header panel, trunklid, and rear spoiler now Anvil carbon. Have the clear 10" autocross spoiler extension, not installed.
As a refresher for mods done in the original build-
Penske double-adjustable front and quad-adjustable (high and low speed bump and rebound) rear shocks
Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes
Fays2 watts link
Wheels are the real-deal magnesium 15x8s from Vintage Engineering. Tires are Avon Cr6ZZ that are pretty old now.
Swain White Lightning coated headers
Interior
Cobra Imola driver seat
Cobra Suzuka evolution (carbon) passenger seat
Motec CDL3 dash system with GPS (original gauges are intact but not hooked up)
The pinstripes and number circles are vinyl, easily removed if you don't like
A few weird things-
No A/C, no heater, no stereo. It was built that way as it was possible to order a '67 without. Lightest is best. Vent windows FTW
I removed the headliner. I prefer the lighter and more open/airy feel without it. The interior sheet metal was all painted a very light gray in the build, looks nicer without it IMO
I also removed the parking brake pedal and cables, they were a dangly mess that bothered me. The rear brake setup still technically has the mechanism. I considered an e-Stopp but haven't gotten around to it
The two below pics are very recent, plan to get a lot more soon. Car is currently at Best-of-Show Coachworks here in San Diego getting detailed and a new Antigravity battery installed.
I will probably end up listing on BaT but wanted to give the group here a first chance, if anyone remembers this build and is interested in taking it forward.
