Need help with new sbc 6-71 build
Hi all,I have a 67 shortbed stepside c10, and am wanting to do a 6-71 sbc combo. I have a cast iron OD trans, truck currently has 4.10’s will probably drop to 3.42’s.
Purpose :
Daily driver when nice out, even cold as long as the roads are clear. I live in Southeastern Ohio, so i should be able to get 9 months or so. Also would like to be able to drive some amount of distance (10 hrs) and not be worried. Mileage is a concern to a degree, would like to get 15 or so just cruising down the highway.
Parts I have from past :
Canfield 230cc heads, 64 cc chamber, 2.08 valves dual springs.
Lots of 4 bolt main blocks
Factory serpintine accessory drives, including A/C
Experience :
None with a roots blower. I have a Turbo 4.8 LS I built, a few older eaton supercharged trucks, some older turbo builds including a Megasquirted 502 BBC twin turbo. I have mild experience with HP Tuners on my own stuff.
My plan :
Stock 4 bolt main block, studded. Some kind of cheaper crank, GOOD rods, and GOOD pistons. My Canfield heads, undecided on rocker setup. I would like to do a tall tunnel ram/blower combo or a intercooled setup. I want it to be outside the hood, at least half the blower. Thinking about Holley Terminator or trying to adapt LS injection so I am familiar. Thinking about 7000rpm redline. I would like to run a tighter cam maybe something in a 230-ish duration, .600 lift, and 110 lsa. I understand i may lose a few HP, is it noticable to go from a 108 to a 114 on a roots engine? Actually proven noticable, not just old dogs saying thats what you have to do. Lots of “old ways” are getting proven wrong, especially in the turbo LS world, just wondering if its the same in the roots world.
(Ex. “Blower” cams, “blower” compression, etc) im running 10.5:1 and 12 psi from a s369 on my 4.8 with a howards rattler cam. Its a beast, but dont tell anyone who says you have to be at 8:1 and have a “turbo” cam.
Shooting for a cool reliable 5-600 horse thats just EASY to start, cruise, run 80 down the interstate and something I can beat on and not worry. Have the support to pulley up and go 750 hp if ever wanted.
Looking for advice on crank, rods, pistons, intakes, valvetrain, pretty much the whole shebang. I was going to do just a refreshed 327 or 350 and call it a day, but if I can build a 800hp engine and only ask 600, i will have peace of mind. Dont really have a budget, i guess just a disclaimer of “ill buy what I actually need” not trying tk get into jesel valvetrain and a callies crank.
Thanks
