      Broose 68 Camaro

I'm currently working on a 68 Camaro I purchased about 18 years ago. I had a local body shop sandblast and replace both rear quarters. I have performed the rest of the work my self. New floor pans and trunk pans welded in. Detroit Speed mini tub and subframe connectors installed. All new air ride suspension from ridetech. Currently I have a 454BBC, TKO 5 Speed, Currie 9" rear. I'm working on the body, block sanding in prep for base coat clear coat. With my limited time I have to dedicate to this project, My goal is have the paint completed by the end of summer.

      2nd up date in color

Well after graduation from You Tube base coat/clear coat 101 university and over 24hours of block sanding, I was ready to go to color. I went with Tamco “Freedom Blue” base coat and Tamco glamour clear coat.

This is not a perfect paint job by any means... but for my first one I'm happy with the results. clear coat is a bit thin in few spots so I ordered more and will need to sand and shoot a few areas to get the clear thickness up so I can cut and buff.

      Cut and Buff

The paint was allowed to cure for a couple of weeks. I noticed there was quite a bit of dust nibs throughout the paint job. So I decided the paint definitely needed to be cut and buffed! (my previous post I mentioned I was going to re-coat the entire car with clearcoat, but came to the conclusion there was plenty of clear) Cutting and buffing is definitely an art all in itself… after watching quite a few YouTube videos and trying different techniques, buffing compound and pads this is what seems to be working well for me.
      Wet-sand with 2000 grit and then 3000
      Bucket of water
      Car Pro ultra cut compound
6” Blue (Bauer) foam cutting pad from Harbor freight
Flex Dual action Orbital Polisher (this is a tool I already had for a few years)
Micro fiber towels from Harbor freight

Wet sand with 2000 grit until all the imperfections were removed. Then hit it with the 3000. I was super cautious around any sharp edge and really tried to avoid it. All the videos I watch said do not cut through the clearcoat or you will be repainting that area. Those warnings stuck in my head. Less is more with the compound . I first started using way too much, the instructions say 4 pea size drops and that works best. I found a slower speed (3 or 4) workout best with the polishing machine I used. I plan to go over the entire car with CarPro Reflect to get it super glossy.

Here are a photo and a link to a time lapse video.

From someone who also garage painted and then wet sanded to perfection, I know what you’re going through.
Solid advice I got was to tape hard edges just to entirely eliminate the risk of sanding through, at least on the first sandpaper grade. So far it has worked well for me.

Can’t wait to see when you push it out into the sun.
