Need spindle help for 2nd gen camaro

I know this has been beat to death and please don't pick on me. I'm in the going together stages of a 72 camaro and have hit a road block. the stock spindle has the a arms running way up hill and struggle to get to desired ride height (qa1 a arms and front suspension kit). I bought a set up Wilwood 2" drop spindles and the steering arm section of the spindle crashes into the wheel, or where the wheel is going to go- I have tire mocked up on wheel fitment tool. I know guys run big tires on the front of these cars and I'm not sure what to do. CPP Corvette style? is there a better option? tire is 275/35/18. I see that lots of guys say don't use drop spindles. If that's bad ok. I'll get rid of them.

i have a 73 Camaro with UMI tube arms and the cpp corvette bearing spindles, currently running 275 35 18s on the front with 6" of backspacing (that's too much maybe 5.5 would have been better) my wheels rub on the control arm in parking lot situations. Also for my taste the wheels are too far into the fender at 6" of BS. In other news i wouldn't recommend a square setup because the rear wheel well needs a taller tire to not look silly, ask me how i know.

I don't think Wilwood would design a spindle that doesn't fit in an 18" wheel. Which wheel mock up tool are you using?

The CPP spindles do not have any drop in them

100% the wilwood steering arm portion of the spindle crashes into a 10" wide 18" wheel (actually the tire). My tool is the one from speedway. I think I'm figuring out that's why guys don't like drop spindles on these cars on anything but drag cars. the tie rod end stays in the same place and the wheel moves up 2" effectively crashing the steering arm (cast on- not a big deal on other spindles as you can fabricate steering arms and move the steering around like is done all the time on drag cars).

Would it be feasable to add CPP spindles that were intended for a 1st gen so I can easily have the capability of fabricating a steering arm?

The bottom of the steering arm is 2.98" straight down from the spindle CL. Tie Rod CL is 6.34" forward of the spindle CL. Rough math from an online calculator puts the center of the tie rod hole approximately 7" from spindle centerline. I admit, that seems close, but I will stand by my statement that I think it is unlikely that Wilwood would manufacture a spindle for a Camaro that doesn't fit in an 18" Wheel.





These tend to not work very well. There is nothing to center the tire on the fixture or keep it square to your hub face. I had the cast aluminum version of this a long time ago and the information I got from it was not useful.

Im not a good internet person. Ive never posted a pic on a board. I just called wilwood tech and they told me this was common. I needed either a bigger diameter or narrower wheel. Oh well.

So my options are put the stock stuff back on or use cpp to get better corvette style hubs and brakes.

There are 1000s of lowered 2nd gens out there with stock height spindles. Maybe I am misunderstanding this.

There is also that, but it seemed secondary. Here is mine in 2017 with off the shelf ridetech parts and CPP C5 spindles. The bottom of my subframe has ground the pavement at this ride height.




This is with ridetech Track 1 parts that never really existed. This is a 2" dropped spindle but all that really did was get me some shock travel back as you can see it still sits about the same. Both pics are with 18x9.5 wheels and the same 265/35-18 tire size.

I have Globalwest upper lower control arms and have replaced the whole front suspension and with there 605 steering box. The old suspension had a whole lot of bump steering. The Globalwest got my car riding on rails. Everything Globalwest build is very good check them out. I have ridetech coilovers all the way around.

You should be able to fix this running a different backspacing. I had the same issue on a 3rd gen nova with the Wilwood 2” drop spindles. You can either run a small shim on the steering arm or get wheels with less backspacing that will then put the wheel closer to the fender allowing space for the steering arm to clear.

Old thread, but why not. I just installed QA1 arms, coil-overs and CPP spindle/C5 calipers. I could not run my new American Racing 18” rims and tires. They rubbed on calipers. Scrambled and ended up with 245 squared on 17” rims. 1.5” drop springs in rear.
