How much boost will this 454 combo handle?
I'm REALLY interested in installing a turbo OR supercharger in my '70 Nova, but my current 454 is a 12.5:1, solid cam motor which I'd prefer not to disassemble. A friend has a nearly stock 454 which I can get for a good deal. My question is, considering the following configuration how much boost will this combo safely handle? I'd replace the oval port heads, intake/carb and cam, but the short block will be left alone. My main concern is the presence of a lot of cast parts and a 2-bolt main. I'd like to end up with a combo that'll make 500-600 boosted horsepower (on a budget of course).
454 w/.030 overbore (balanced and bluprinted)
Cast crank with standard mains and rods
Cast pistons w/8.0-1 compression (NOT forged)
Two bolt mains
Stock iron oval port heads (to be replaced - best options??)
Old, old aluminum intake for weight savings only (to be replaced - best options??)
Crane 266 hydraulic flat tappet cam (to be replaced - best options??)
Roller tip rockers
Stock 6 quart oil pan
63K miles since overhaul (I'll probably change the bearings)
Thanks,
Dan

I'd worry about the cast pistons, and crank. The heads should be ok, and a mild cam with good lift and no overlap would be best.
8psi would probably be ok if I had to pull something out of thin air.
12-28-2005 #4I had about the same setup last spring and eventually broke ring lands off a piston. Lasted long enought to get it tuned and have a little fun with it. I was running 11 to 15 lbs boost. It might last awhile on 8 lbs boost, just be careful with timing and run good gas.
MikeTurbos, 1700.00
Hot Side, 1500.00
Cold Side, 1,000.00
Fuel System, 1,000.00
The look on the face of whomever the passenger is when the tires break loose at o say 70 mph or so........priceless

Pistons are trouble, cranks are stronger then you may think. Heads will be ok. 2 bolts are fine. The P1SC will barely make enough wind to do anything on a big block, think D1SC.
You could probably put 8lbs on it until you can up grade the crank to factory steel and 7/16 rods, or better. Then you could go 15LBS

haha, enough

I'd think somewhere in the 600-700hp range if I had to guess.

With the right cam, yeah, 600 to 700. Next question I am sure is what is the right cam. that will need to be decided with your blower order.
