car skates feedback

ok went to get set to push my car back and forth in garage ..they had 2 kind ones with steel wheels ..ones with poly type wheels?...anyone use either ? pros and cons..both are same price just wanted feedback before i spend thanks...

I havent had experience with car skates, but the steel wheels on my cherry picker would stop rolling when the tiniest pebble was present. I replaced them with poly wheels and its helped a bit. The steel wheels roll better if the floor is smooth and clean though. Also, if you have a painted floor the steel ones will do a number on it. The ploy ones could "go flat" though if it sits for too long with the weight on it.

go-jacks are awesome. the poly wheels are better for moving things around. just dont store your cars on them or they will get flat spots. and thats all kinds of bad.

I bought a pair of inexpensive ($35 ea.) skates from 'Oreilly's with steel casters. I had to grind the bolts down some so they would rotate freely. Once you got it rolling it wasn't to bad. They have cheap casters on them and would work much better if they had quality casters. They can become expensive themselves.

It is a small machine shop in Tennessee and the prices are great! I upgraded to the ball bearing castors and 8 x 16 and have NO problem moving the car. In fact, I usually have my wife help me so the thing doesn't get away from me it moves so easily.

Go-Jaks are great. A little more expensive but I believe well worth it. No need for a floor jack to lift the car everytime you need them. I move a 96 Impala around my garage like it was one of those buckets in those Mentos Mints commercials.

thanks alot fluid..they look pretty stout....i have thought about the ones with the jacks..would be very handy but i always have jack handy so ill dump the extra money somewhere else..

Summit and Jegs have good deals on the aluminum ones and they come with a hard rubber wheel. Only problem with the aluminum ones is that they do not have side bars which if pushed up and over can knock the car off the dolly. Otherwise they are a steal at the delivered price. Actually if you have wide tires they fit easier and will hold tighter due to the bolt heads hitting the treads.

As far as Acces Tech I have a bent rotisserie that is from them. Enough said!

I have 4 cheap one's, from Harbor Freight. I did have to add shims to get the wheels 'aligned' properly, which made rolling the car around much easier. I dang near busted a nut trying to force it one time by myself when the wheels were not 'aligned' very well. The mounting pads were not on the same plane, so I added washers until they were all fairly parallel with each other. I think I paid $120 for all 4.

I too have these. The 8K pound per set. They have hard plastic wheels. I move my car and my boat (on the tandem axle trailer). They are great. They are so strong they outlive my grandchildren and I don't have any kids yet!

I've got the cheapie harbor freight ones and they're great. Didn't have to shim anything, either.

I have two sets from Tractor Supply which are IDENTICAL to the pair I have from HF. I paid 45 a pair at TSC (90 for four) and just picked up another pair at HF on sale for 40.
I was more comfortable with the steel castors as my Firebird will live on a set for a while and I had no problem rolling them around and no clearance issues with the bolts.
I use them for moving rearends and engine blocks also so having some "extras" is good.

Got a set from HF and they are adequate for my needs. I'm sure there are nicer ones out there if you want to spend the money. FWIW, they did NOT do any damage to my epoxy floor.

Glad to see some good feedback about the Harbor Freight skates. I bought a set of 4 last month on sale and haven't had a chance to use them yet. I'll be putting the car up on them probably next week though once I get home for the holidays. I'm always hesitant to buy stuff from HF because I'm a big believer in "you get what you pay for," but with their sales, they make it so dang hard not to buy stuff sometimes.

ok just got a set today from farm and fleet near me..99 bucks for all 4 steel wheels got assembled and pushed my olds cutlass into the other stall in my garage..aside form it being a heavy ass car they worked good..and the fact that the steering wheel doesnt lock..lol..that sucked,,thanks for everyones feedback..

The dollies I have are from Farm & Fleet too! they are very nice quaility for the money.

The dollies are made by "LARIN" in case anyone wants to find them somewhere else. They make a great line of auto products.

Those go jacks look nice. But I think it depends on how often you will use them.

I got some el cheapo ones a few years ago - $35 a pair at Big Lots. Similar quality to the ones at HF or that roving tool show company (their name escapes me). I finally used them last month to move my 77 in the garage. Worked fine. I can see where the cheap wheels might cause issues. But I won’t use them that much.
