Power steering filters are a very good idea. ANY robust hydraulic system uses filters and has strict maintenance schedules regarding replacement and inspection.

The filter should be one that is designed to be used in hydraulic systems. Lee power steering sells one but you can likely also find some online that you could use with JIC/AN fittings pre-installed. I use -6 JIC teflon line for pressure and return, -10 JIC lines for Pump feed from reservoir, a lee filter, and a 10" wide x 3" tall x 1.5" power steering cooler.
