      LT1 rear disc problem

I started to do the conversion this morning on my malibu when I came across something. My malibu has a 12 bolt in it with 9" housing ends. Well when we built the rearend we put larger than stock ends on it for a bigger axle bearing. So now my lt1 brackets are not big enough for my axle to go through. So my question is has anybody else ran in to this and can they be machined to fit? The inside diameter is like 2.82" and they need to be 3.15". I don't see why they can't be machined. It looks like there is plenty of room. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Andy

I have a 12-bolt with Tom's large Ford bearing ends. The ends are machined to accept a standard Chevy backing plate bolt pattern.

I too have GM LT1 4th gen caliper mounting brackets. The bracket needs to be installed between the axle flange and the bearing. In other words, the bearing needs to be removed in order to install the brackets.

The caliper bracket is used to retaing the bearing in the housing, so boring out the hole to fit won't work. Some of the aftermarket brackets have a notch cut in them to allow fitment without bearing removal.

Carl, thanks for the respose but I am still lost. If I remove the bearing on the axle do I just put it in the housing end, then install the bracket and the axle. How do you remove the bearing on the axle? I guess I have been working on the car to much today and my brain is fried. Thanks for the help. Andy

No problem. Make sure that the brackets are installed correctly. There is an inboard and outboard side.

They need to be mounted so that the caliper clears other suspension components and has the bleeders up.

Hi Carl, i'm in the process of the same LT1 rear brakes on an 8.5 GM rear and wondered what you used for the e-brake cables.

They will make anything you want. For me, I chose cables that fit the LT1 caliper on one end and slipped into the stock frame bracket on the other. The cables attach to the stock intermediate cable using the stock brackets. The only minor change I had was to make a new RH side intermediate cable guide rod, the one that slips into the subframe to hold the cable. The cables I ordered were a bit to short to fit the stock cable guide. It took about 5 minutes to make a new one.

Control will have a form you can fill out that shows the specifics.

Hi Carl, Thanks for responding and the information on the brake cables. I have a couple of questions on what you ordered. It looks like your part numbers use the same cable end on both ends of the inner cable. I was unable to find a matching part number in the Control Cables catalog. Are the ends the same or am I not reading the numbers properly. You also metioned the inner cables were a bit short. As I read the numbers the cables would be 35.2 and 33 inches. Is this coeerect and if so how much long would you make the cables for a direct install. On last question, are the outer cable lenghts ok or would you change those also.

Thought of anothe question. On the LS1 front brakes what flexible brake hose do you use.

      Thanks Jon

      Jon,

Whoops, thanks for catching the error. I pulled the wrong receipt. The part numbers that were posted above are incorrect.

The way I did it was to mock up housing and cable lengths using 12ga solid copper house wire. It's stiff enough to hold the shape but can be straightened out for length measurements. The ends can also be twisted around the intermediate cable and the caliper lever to get the lenghts close. Mine were off a bit, but it has been too long and I don't remember how much they were off. Give Control Cables a call, tell them exactly what you have, and they will know what type of ends you need. At one time they were looking at suppling these exact cables to a major aftermarket brake company, so they may even have the necessary measurements.

For the front C4 PBR caliper I used a Russell -3AN to Banjo braided steel hose.

      Thanks Carl,

I have been looking at your and Torkers web sights for ideas and both of you have put together very nice cars. Also enjoyed the articles in Super Chevy.

Thanks again for answering my questions. More may come along as I build my 68 Convertible Camaro. It is being built as a nice driving car that will stop well and have enough power to make it fun.
