Car is painted... AGAIN!! :)

Well its been a LONG road.. with set-backs and drama.. but is that light at the end of the tunnel? (or is it a train?) ;)

Here it is in the spray booth.. it just got its first layer of color, has been sanded and is about to get another.. Also the new firewall has been painted and was burried under 4 coats of clear :D

So by today im sure all the paint work is done and they will be doing the dyna-pro undercoating.. then re-install the drivetrain and put it all together

I keep telling myself it will all be worth it in the end..

Looking really good, Steve! I can't believe they had to "re-do" or modify i should say all of that bodywork and paint that was already done. It will definitely be worth it in the end. Keep up the good work.

P.S. Got a link to this dyna-pro undercoating? Is it any better than regular undercoating?

Two new pics added from yesterday..

The dyno-pro is like a line-x bed liner but less bumpy.. supposed to be good for an undercoat.. for the interiors they use a stuff called "lizzard skin"..

I don't know much about either product..

I believe the shop that is painting my car used Dyno-Pro as well. They said the process is just like Line-X but the final result is very smooth. They did the trunk, wheel wells, and underside of my Chevelle with it. Nice stuff.

Steve, the paint looks great, my car looks similar right now, not very glossy. They will do the final buffing and polishing once we have assembled the rest of the car in case we chip or scratch any parts.

I kinda like the way the paint looks in that "satin" post sanding stage. I don't think I've ever seen a car finished like that, sort of like the flat black people are putting on street rods recently. What would need to be done to leave a car like that, instead of polished? Would there be durability issues? Can the paint be sealed to prevent water absorption? It's way to late for my current project but it "Kinda makes me go HHMMMmmmmm" for the next one?

kevin, yes the paint could be left that way, all that has been done is they shot 3-4 coats of base, may of wet sanded base, then shot 3-4 coats of clear, then wet sanded clear, that is the satin finish look, the paint is completely sealed and nothing would bother it, however the longer the paint cures the harder it is to buff out, there are some other ways to finish like this, like using flattening agents etc, will give you a satin look compared to a gloss, this is what guys do when painting a firewall black with base clear, they flatten the paint so that it will be semi gloss, that is if that is what is wanted on the firewall, goodluck

Yes, they have "flat" clears and would be just as good as finishing it in a standard clear if you wanted the satin primer look.

Man....I don't know if you know this or not but I hold you partially responsible for the SECOND total re-think of my 69

I first noticed I was following in the same trap as you did on the firewall (I had welded it closed and crammed it full of bondo)...and later went back, tore it open and plated it as you did.

Now....I look at that outrageously georgeous LS1 and I can't get enough. So....I have plans to pick up the LS1 for my car in the next couple of days!

You gotta stop with the mods, because my checkbook can't handle it!


No really, that car is wicked smooth. I really hope to see it in person. You have been beyond patient, yet relentless in staying on top of things and pushing it forward. You are also providing a path for people like me to pick up on and follow. VERY NICE!
