1971 Chevelle build [PICS]
Hi all,
Below is a few pics of my car's current state along with some of the work i did earlier this year. However, I am in the process of beginning a frame up project converting the car to a autocross & road racing capable car.
Last spring i decided to pull my car out of hibernation and participate in the 2017 Power Tour. My wife and I recently had our first child and I hadn't touched the car (2 years) since he was born. There were a lot of little problems with the original wiring along with a bad clutch. I began last spring with just wanting to re-wire the entire car and change the clutch.... well as things like this do... it snow-balled. I figured while I'm doing this wiring it would be a good time to do fuel injection, a radio, a new Dakota dash, a meth kit, new radiator, new tires, new tilt column and wheel, sound deaden everything and a bunch of other things. I have posted some pics of that journey below. After all that, we finished the car the weekend before Power Tour which gave me just enough time to drive some bugs out of it. We made it the whole trip with ZERO problems... i was amazed.
Now that is over, im finally doing what i have wanted to do for a really long time. With the guidance of this forum and Doug at Global West i am converting the car into a corner carving machine from the ground up.
Below is what i have in the works so far:
- I salvaged a donor frame from a local yard to start this project so i didn't have to completely blow apart my running car right away.
- Boxing and bracing with the HPI kit.
- Full Global west KT kit in the front and their coilover set up in the rear with Viking double adjustable shocks to start with.
- Going to use 18" ET Classic V wheels however the tires are TBD (i didn't think it would be as hard as it is to find a decently wide tire in an 18" size)
As of right now i thing im going to re-purpose my procharged small block to be used in this set up. I thought long and hard about going LS but part of me likes the old school aspect of a SBC. Still up in the air though because i will have to spend some money to get this thing capable of sustained abuse.
Below are those pics i was talking about along with the frame i just loaded into the garage earlier this week. Thanks for looking and i look forward to posting updates.

I would not worry about going LS with that beast under the hood. My SBC runs too good to pull out just to replace it with LS power. I will not build another old school motor though, if this one spits the bit its LS time. Nice car!!
