I've used my 68 Camaro as a daily. No problems at all. The full ride tech suspension was the best improvement for both street driving and autocross. Many people start with the motor, but the suspension and brakes will make the biggest difference in your comfort level. I'm sure there are many fast drivers out there with stock(or uprated) rear leaf springs, but the coil overs are a world of difference.
