      Hello,

im looking for anyone who has installed a 4L80E into a first gen. If you would please post up about where the engine is located, stock, moved back closer to the firewall, or moved closer to the radiator. Also, did you cut the trans tunnel/floor. If you have pics, please post a link.

I have the street&Performance swap plates that locate the bell housing in the factory location, if you move the motor back it will only make the trans to tunnel even worst moving it forward might give more room for the trans (not sure). SBC 350 frame mounts with energy suspension motor mounts. I used the G Force crossmember. It all fit but the main connector on the trans is going to need a little floor clearancing to be safe. The crossmember fit good but I had to put a 1.5" block to raise the trans mount to get a decent pinion angle. G Force should raise trans mount surface on it. My trans is the newer style with one cooling line on the front and the other in the rear which is a tight fit. I bought the Banjo fittings in -6AN from Sweet Performance and that should do fine. I used ARH headers and they fit with this set up with plenty of room. you can see pictures in my build I hope this helps.

      Wayne,

Thanks for the heads up. I read page 18 of your build... Damn, it might be easier for me to use a 4L60e..

I used carshop engine mounts and a PATC trans crossmember. I would not recommend this crossmember. It had the trans sitting way too low so I had to cut the mount tab off and reconfigure it. I did bang the tunnel a little on the passenger side for the lines, but it was really not that bad.

Do the car shop engine mounts place the motor in the factory location... Or set the motor back closer to the firewall?

Hello David. I installed an old version 4L80E in my '67 behind a big block. The older case 4L80E has the oil cooler lines at the front of the case. I believe that there is a problem installing the newer cases in a Camaro. They have one of the cooler lines coming out further rearward. The Big Block engine stands are different. they move the engine over to the passenger side, and I believe forward. The trans fit with no body modifications. I built my own crossmember because of the 3.5" exhaust. Good luck!!

4L80E install in a first gen camaro

I used a 1996 4L85E from a 4wd. It has a better O/D setup. The O/D has strait cut gears also, but doesn't make any whining noises. I bought an aftermarket tail housing for the speedo.

Hello Jim. I don't want to hijack David's thread, so I will keep it brief. If you need more information PM me and I will be happy to help as much as I can. If you go to Jakes Performance website he has a wealth of information about the 4L80E unit. website:http://www.jakesperformance.com/. He sells computers, trans brakes and at one time he sold the tail housings as well. If (and I know you aren't) you were running a carb you would need a throttle position sensor for the computer. I used my stock (67) shifter with an aftermarket shift indicator face plate for a 700R4 conversion. I had to grind the detents on the shifter to add one more position and shorten the others. The engine is off to the passenger side, so that is the tight side. I used 90 degree fittings on the cooler lines and a flexible dipstick tube. One of the biggest advantages this trans has is the ability to drive around like a normal car most of the time and yet hold huge amounts of power when called upon. also, make sure you have a good driveshaft...

I have the newer 4l85 in my 69. It fits. I used banjo bolt fittings for my cooler lines, but I think it would fit with the regular 90's on the front but the back line would be tight.

I'm interested to know what crossmember some of you would recommend...
I built my own to get my 4l80e in, but I sort of hate it... but I also don't like the idea of spending $300-$400 on one either...
I did see this... but I bet it's typo and is actually a 4l60e...

I have the hooker crossmember. Very nice piece. It's on sale right now.

How does it fit with 1" setback plates, vs. the hooker mounts?

      Guys,

If you could, will you measure the distance between the the firewall and the passenger/driver side heads. I'm curious to find out how far back people have their motors and trans mounted.
