Keeping Mice Out Of Your Car Ideas

Saw a link about this on another site and thought it would be a good link to start here. Seems to be a common problem with alot of enthusiasts who store their projects for the winter. I have heard everything from irish spring soap, and juniper to bounce sheets and traps. Got a good idea post it. Here is my way to keep them out of the garage and shed.

      PEANUTBUTTER AND PLASTER OF PARIS!!!!

Take some Plaster of paris and mix it in with some peanut butter. Mice will eat the peanut butter/paris mix then run outside to drink. Once they drink(and believe me they will drink!!) The plaster of paris will swell inside of them killing them within minutes!! WORKS EVERYTIME. Also works with those pesky chipmunks that keep ripping apart my rock walls!! Nice thing is if you use alot of plaster of Paris you may end up with nice SCUPTURES standing all around your yard!! LOL!!!

For a guy named toofun thats a pretty cruel way to keep mice from your car. Then again, I used to feed them to snakes like peanuts.

Could you just leave a mousetrap on the floor of the garage? I never had this problem but that should work, and it seems a little quicker than slowly exploding them.

I have read about this problem quite a bid on the corvette forums, the best idea i saw was to leave a 5 gallon bucket next to your car with a ramp to the top. then suspend some food in the middle of the bucket but .... make sure it is something like peanut butter on a coffee can that can roll so when they jump on the coffee can they roll off in to the bucket.

Personally i would probably just poison the mice

Only problem with traps is if you dont check it daily or go away for the weekend you could end up with a nasty smell when you come home. My way they "pass on" somewhere outside where they can be "recycled" into the earth or become crow food!! Is that a little more environmentally freindly?

What if they dont go outside. Then you have rotting sculptures dying in your car, your garage, or even your house. The same thing can happen with poison.
It gets cold here in Michigan and I think they would want to stay in the heat instead of running out into 0 degree weather and 12inches of snow.

      They have no choice

They have no choice but to go outside and drink. When an animal needs water they see the closest source to do so. They will go out to find water then come back in.Most poison baits like DECON work the same way. Problem is they usually dont make it back in because the reaction of water to the paris is pretty quick. I do this in my shed and find many "mouse gnomes" around the outside of the shed every spring. I live in New England. First year in my new house I found 8 nests in my shed come spring and a good deal of things ruined. Been using this system for over four years now. NO MORE mice nests in my shed and plenty of food for the crows!!

Boy, am I glad I live in CA! Even though my buddies 67 Chevelle did get mice in his garage. Of course as projects go it had also become a 67 "storage".

Isn't the poison you buy in the stores better because it not only kills them but dries them out from the inside so they don't smell as bad.

      Ok now I'm worried...

      Talk about blowing up pests....

Here in sunny S. Fla. the fishermen and shrimp boats hate it when the seagulls hover around and steal things. Their feces, constant begging/badgering tend to anger many locals. Tourists like feeding the gulls because the birds are VERY VERY good at catching things in mid air when tossed food bits. Here comes the bad part....

The gulls are considered pests by most locals and the afore mentioned fishermen/shrimpers. So much in fact, that someone came up with the idea of tossing Alka Seltzer tablets to them in mid flight! Birds, and I think rodents as well, lack the ability to burp. The gulls gobble up the Alka Seltzer which quickly leads the what I imagine is a very painfull and tortured death. I've never seen it or done it, but apparently it's fast enough and effective enough to drop them right out of the air within seconds.

      Yup That Is True

      Yes,

Many fishermen in the New England area too. Have the same problem with the gulls. Alkaseltzer does to the trick with them. Their stomach linings expand to the point of bursting and they literally bust a gut, rupturing their insides. They eat it because they will go after just about anything you throw their way. Dont know if it works on Mice though. I think it is interesting how people come up with different methods for different animals. For example,
I know that in Japan they pay big bucks for "live" game fish from the carribean. They go to a restaurant and pick them out of a tank. This way they are assured the freshest catch they can get. So how do they do it? Fisherman squirt CYANIDE at the fish while diving underwater near rocks. The cyanide "DAZES" the fish long enough for the fisherman to net it and haul it into the packaging containers unharmed and unscathed. They say the Cyanide dissapates out of the fishes system within 8-10 hours. Just in time for the 12 hour trip it makes to Hong Kong and Japan.

Also know a guy that use to go shark fishing. He would chum the waters so that a frenzy would churn around his boat. Then he would have a huge kettle full of Grapefruits that would be in boiling water. He would dump the grapefruits over board and the sharks would swallow them whole. Then he would sit and wait. The grapefruits would rupture inside the sharks stomach killing it and sending it floating to the surface. No struggle, no lines. He would get about 10-12 sharks at a time in less than an hours work. ILLEGAL? Probably but man it works!! Saw a video on it that he made once and it is truely incredible. I dont agree with this type of fishing but unfortunately outside of the U.S. you would be amazed at what goes on.

In my misspent youth, I'd heard the same thing, so ~20 years ago I decided to try it. It may have killed the poor bird, but it definitely wasn't while I could see it - and the bird stuck around for a while.

I know that just a trap doesn't work on the mice that live in my neck of the woods. I can't tell you how many traps I've set, only to come back and find the mice tripped them, and ate the peanut butter. I've even had a few where the mice got the peanut butter without tripping the traps! I resorted to mixing the peanut butter with poison, or just putting out poison. I'm pretty much a live and let live kind of guy (except for bees, I kill them with impunity), but once you invade my house, the gloves come off. You have no idea how happy I was when I went into my garage for a cigarette and saw a mouse eating the poison . It was pure redneck entertainment!
Oh, most of the poisons out there work by inhibiting the blood from clotting, and the animal bleeds to death internally. ( I know this because my stupid dog ate some , and that's what the vet told me. ) It is neutralized with vitamin K

Oh yeah! One more thing that works. Stuff the cracks in walls with steel wool. The mice don't like to chew through it. It is best to remove their access before you try removing the mice.

Years ago when I lived in yonkers we had roaches. Lots of them . My dad suggested we buy toads and let them patrol the apartment.

      He drank a lot.

Actually, toads do know when it's time to "patrol" in an organzied fashion and when it's OK to just jump around.

P.S. For those wondering, pictured is my Western Hognose Snake (brownish) and Desert Kingsnake (black/yellow).

I've also got a Jungle Carpet Python (among others) which is a snake frequently used in Australia to control mice populations (which are absolutely insane) in their grain warehouses. He would be a great candidate for the job. Plus, a mid sized or full sized one (6-8ft), wouldn't be easily lost in your car, heh.
