      Moving to Texas

Hi all, can someone give me some insight on relocating to Texas with two cars, a 70 Chevelle and a 67 Camaro. Both exempt in my current state. What are the req's in TX. if any? So long former state howdy new friends, neighbors and car enthusiasts. Won't mention the messed up state I am fleeing but it sounds a lot like CALIFORNIA!!!

      Thanks
      Chris

They should have a state website, I'd start there. My friend Dave moved there from Michigan a couple years ago and took an 04 GTO with a 417 LS3 based motor in it. Thats his driver when he isn't in his 05 Duramax. LPE did the GTO so its super stealthy. Good luck to ya, I'm jealous...

I believe both are exempt from DOT inspection due to age. I also think they are old enough for the emissions stuff as well. I'm in limbo with my car as I"m importing from another country and it has to be "in original, unmodified condition" to be exempt from the emissions tests.

EDIT: no need for emissions - Here is the TX.gov website - http://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buyin...reign-vehicles

      Get your drivers license:
      http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/driverl...ingtotexas.htm

As for registering, it is at the county office, but the procedure is pretty much the same in any county. Car is only exempt from DOT safety inspection if the car is registered as an "antique". You are only supposed to do that if the car is only for shows and events. If you plan on driving it otherwise you would register it normally or as a "classic". When registering it as an antique or classic you can use unissued year of manufacture plates. Texas used to make new plates for each year. If you look you can find unissued clean plates for your year model. Here is my county's registration procedure:
      http://www.collincountytx.gov/tax_as..._resident.aspx

When I had questions in the past I just dropped by the office and they were quite helpful.

Where you moving to? I live just north of Dallas in Plano.

We had a reaaallly mild summer this year. Wait until you experience a hot one and tell me then. I've been in Texas 40 years and I think the summers can be oppressive. But, yes, IMO the environment in every other way is better than Cali.

Yes - sounds almost as fun as training in full MOPP gear at Ft Bliss or Ft Hood in the summer. I still don't care for the heat. I wish my garage had insulation and A/C. Damn thing faces West. Where I work now it is 71.6F and 45% humidity all day everyday.

Left CA for TX back in 84 and never looked back. My Camaro is registered as an antique and I have '69 plates. This form of registration is good for 5 years, no inspections required. With this form of registration your driving miles will be limited. If you want to put on a lot of miles you may need to get a different form of registration. Hope you have A/C in your cars, I don't and driving in the summer is pretty toasty.

Where are you moving to, in Texas?

I'm in Wichita Falls, about 125 miles from Dallas/Ft Worth or Oklahoma City.

I'm from Chicago but will be working in Houston for a few weeks in Jan. I'll gladly miss a Chicago January! I don't see myself relocating any time soon, but I'd love to have a Chicago based home and a winter getaway down south when I have a few more grey hairs.

      Enjoy your new home.

My wife and I are from the suburbs of Chicago, this has got to be the worst state to live in. People are leaving this state in hordes...More people have left this state more then any other. We are currently looking into moving to either Florida or Texas. I want out of here. Congrats on the move!

I've lived in Texas most of my adult life. I am originally from Maryland....... I live in central Texas near ft hood. I love Austin and used to live in Abilene and San Antonio, Thanks USAF!! I have been to California too many time from south to north. I have a feeling you will like it here, cost of living is dirt cheap and as mentioned, you can put antique plates on your play cars and just have a decent daily driver. The heat is much better than Saudi Arabia, ask me how I know. Good luck with the move and if you can, buy a place with no HOA and plenty of land to build a shop on if it doesn't already have one.

Californians are taking over Texas! I just hope all of you Californians are leaving the F-ed up failing political ideas behind you at the cali border and not trying to screw up our great state....

it's not the heat that's horrible...it's the humidity combined with the heat. at least in Houston anyways.
