Wilwood vs. 2011+ GT Brakes on '65 Mustang

      Hey all,

So I'm kinda mulling about a little on brake options for my '65 Mustang. I'm setting up a Pro-Touring build with a modified Mustang II(ish) front end and a TCI torque arm rear, along with a bunch of chassis bracing and other small tweaks. I've been looking two ways for brakes.

      1. Wilwood discs front/rear. 12.88" 4 piston fronts (or 6 piston, possibly), 4 piston rears w/ parking brake.
      2. Mustang Steve kit with 2011+ Mustang GT 13.2" 2 piston sliders up front, 1994-2004 Cobra discs in rear w/ parking brake.

Either one will get a dual master cylinder manual pedal setup mounted under the dash.

The car will just be an around town driver, somewhere around 600 RWHP turbocharged 6 cylinder, maybe see an occasional autocross or track day and an occasional drag strip, but mostly just street toy. A/C, electric power steering, yada yada, nothing crazy. edit: Wheels are 17" all around, 17x8 fronts, 17x9 rears, though I may grab some more 17x9s for a square setup.

I really think that with my intended usage, good pads on the factory late model brakes will likely serve me just as well as the Wilwoods would, even if they don't have as much "style". It's not a SEMA car, so I'll take cost and performance over style on things like the brakes every time. Anyone have any input on this? My experience comes from RX7s which had pretty good brakes stock, so starting clean is a bit of a departure for me.

      Thanks!

I just installed Wilwood 12.88 4 piston on my 68 Fastback, and they work very well compaired to the 11" granada rotor/caliper set-up from before.
I have not driven a 2011 mustang to compare, but the wilwood set-up is very very good.
      Your car set-up is very simular as to mine, 331 t76, 4 speed and 18" rims.Name: 20150914_191455 (Copy).jpg

Interesting, I appreciate the feedback. It's good to know that the Wilwood setup is more than just show.

The GT brakes are decent.. But they might be tight fitting on a 17" wheel. The calipers are pretty large on their backside.
