5 point harness question? Help me out.

Hey guys, wasn't sure where to find the right answer so ill start here. My family does this racing series here in MN called Beater-X. Its basically a poor mans version of trophy truck racing. Its a big oval track with table tops and jumps. My dad sponsors my brother and I and fronts most all the expenses. He really wants to join us out on the truck, BUT he had a pacemaker put in a couple years ago. 5 point harnesses are required in this sport. The left shoulder harness puts to much pressure on his pacemaker and is painful. I was just curious if any one knows any one that sells a harness for people with pacemakers or there is a company that can custom make something? I know its probably not the best idea for him to be doing this with a pacemaker but its getting hard to continue telling him no and I guess Im just trying to find a way to get him in a vehicle and be safe. Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I doubt you're going to find a "pacemaker" series in any certified racing harness. I don't mean to be patrimonial, but what does your dad's doctor have to say about this? What happens to a pacemaker at 20Gs (the instantaneous force in a serious crash)?

I know its a dumb question and idea. I don't know what would happen to a pacemaker in a serious crash. But if he thinks hes going to do it, I would like to make sure hes safe. Maybe its just not going to happen.

Like me, sounds like you've got a stubborn old man for a father, lol.

I just don't know how you can make a person safe when he's got a pacemaker, and the safety harness digs into it.

The reason I suggested it is because it has thick padding in the shoulder and chest area.
If you racing in a series were contact is likely it's foolish to not wear one imho.

I have a new Hybrid System that is a lot more comfortable than my old HANS.

As far as your Dad goes, if I were you I would make sure that his Doctor clears him for this. Even if it is for your peace of mind. I know that some day my Kid will have to pry the Car Keys out of my Hand - but I also remember my Mom driving a 40' Motorhome when she had early Alzheimers, who knows what could have happened.

      Good Luck!

A good suggestion Tim. A HANS is needed for any 5 or 6 point harness (where the shoulders are pinned to the seat). It might make a difference in comfort too.
