NorCal tri Valley, Livermore area, looking for some help tuning my Carb/Engine

I'm still running really rich and It's stinking up the garage and if the wind is not blowing right , it's stinking up the inside of my car.

I've tried adjusting vacuum and got really close to max vacuum of 20hz (from below 15 when I started) but then the car started backfiring through the carb with any real type of throttle (idled fine), so I backed out the idle screws another 1/2 turn out (so they are roughly 1 full turn from full in) and the car seems to drive okay, but I still think it's rich. I don't have a timing gun anymore, all my cars I can use the computer to get that information, so i'm not sure if it's timing as well as the carb setup or what. Not sure if the carb is too big, but it's a nice cammed 396 with a 750DP (I think it's a 750, not sure how to tell between the 650dp and the 750dp)..

Anyone local with good experience with the classic BB and Holley carbs?

      Thanks

Carl Rumberger of Performance Dynamics is a guru at this. I learned from him in the late 70's. Tuning fuel systems (carbs & EFI) & ignition systems is all he does (40 years +). (916) 488-3114
