Gen 2/Gen 3 Hemi - Pro's/Con's
Hello guys,
I am considering between a Ray Barton Gen 2 Hemi, alloy block and heads and a Gen 3 Hemi
From what I have gathered, an all alloy block Gen 2 would probably weigh around 547lbs while the Gen 3 would weigh just over 400lbs.
Having said that, at 700 Horsepower, the Gen 3 would be supercharged, which would add more weight, then intercooling so it does not overheat and the weight difference between the 2 becomes much closer.
Now the difference is, the lower RPM use of power/torque of a Gen 2 (528ci or so) vs the RPM range of the gen 3, which would be at 3500+ Rpm.
- What is still going to be the better over-all motor in a performance sense?
- How much difference does that RPM make... I mean, RPMs go up quickly anyway, and would that not just be relevant for the first initial gear, after that the car is geared to shift gears and stay in RPM range anyway (in otherwords, the Gen 2 will start with its power at 2000rpm, the gen 3 will kick in at 3500rpm, after that its the same, difference being only the initial 1500 rpm at the start)...?
- How much difference would the extra torque of the Gen 2 add to the cars traffic light-traffic light fun compare to the Gen 3 (considering the RPMs might only be 1500 difference)?
- Would there be a drawback to all that torque for the street considering tires will fry, is it possibly better to have the RPM's higher in that case which allows you to roll a little more before the power hits? Or is this not going to make any difference)?
So really speaking - Why would I spend 30-40,000 on a Ray Barton Gen 2 Hemi, full alloy block, heads, etc, designed with fuel injection and so forth at 700 Horsepower vs a Gen 3 fuel injected motor at 700hp (with a supercharger i assume to get there?) and vice versa?
If I give you 40,000 to build either engine, why would the Gen 3 be chosen, why would the Gen 2 be chosen? Pros/Cons of each.

06-19-2015 #2You did not mention the car or the intended purpose. Considering this is a pro touring board I'm going to assume this is a fun street car that may be able to do an HPDE event here and there. Keep in mind I'm a Mopar guy, have done open track and have a Dart for this intended purpose. I also have a shop that modernizes all kinds of car besides Mopar. There is no doubt everone loves the gen 2 hemi, I get that. I've worked on a some, I've driven stock hemi cars and cars with hemis in them. I'm not a fan. Its original intended purpose was great. My experiences are they are so large the fitment issues alone are good enough reason to not have it. Exhaust, headers, motor mounts, steering are all nightmares. This becomes a game of fractions which is not worth it in my book as its not a recipe for longevity. Durability in the real world is something I'd question. It always seems these motors are plagued with issues. The gen 3 hemi is no picnic either in terms of fitment, but is way more fitting in a pro touring type of build. We built a 71 Chall with a stock 6.1 a couple years ago and it was and still is a pleasure. Tight, strong motor that doesn't leak or burn oil and runs all day without shutting it off. As my time allows, I'd like to run more events, and from my experience, superchargers usually have some type of heat problem in a track setting. Just look at the engineering of the cooling on the Hellcat, and even that can only handle limited track time. My slant is something like a set it and forget type of mentality, so yours may be different. I'd build a gen 3 with a target power range of 600 normally aspirated.
